#4 Cortland Races Past Keuka, 23-2, in NCAA Div. III 1st Round

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fifteen different players scored at least one goal as the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team defeated Keuka College, 23-2, Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Div. III Women's Lacrosse Tournament at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.

The Red Dragons extended their winning streak to 16 games, improving to 19-1 on the season, and will host a four-team regional on Saturday and Sunday. Cortland faces the winner of Kenyon at Adrian on Saturday at 11 a.m. The other teams playing for spots in the regional are Bridgewater St., Bowdoin, Geneseo and Susquehanna.

Freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) led the Red Dragons with four goals. Freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) totaled a game-high eight points on one goal and seven assists, just one fewer then her school record. Junior Taylor Reh (Miller Place) tallied three goals, and sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) recorded two goals and two assists.

Senior Maria Di Fato (Camillus/West Genesee) and freshman Colleen Dougherty (Cazenovia) each netted a pair of goals with Dougherty's scores being the first of her career. Junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt), sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman Alex Fritz (Armonk/Byram Hills) contributed one goal and one assist apiece. Two other Red Dragons, freshmen Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas), scored her first career goal in the game.

Senior goalie Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) made two saves and allowed one goal in the first half. Freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) played the first 20 minutes of the second half and did not make a save before giving way to freshman Andrea Moore (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), who did not face a shot over the final 10 minutes of action. Hayes-Hurley also added five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers, Monaghan recorded five draws and senior Natalie Melaniff (Wantagh) collected four ground balls.

Junior Taylor Smith (Webster) and sophomore Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam) scored Keuka's (13-4) goals. Smith won three draw controls and recorded four ground balls. Senior Courtney French (Massena) scooped up three ground balls. Senior goalie Molly Hogan (Horseheads) registered 13 saves.

Cortland wasted little time in taking control of the game, building an 8-1 lead just before the midway point of the first half as seven different players scored. The lead grew to 15-1 at the half with Di Fato, Reh, Hayes-Hurley, Monaghan and Dougherty each finding the back of the net twice and Cortland going deep into its bench. After Monaghan and Smith traded early second-half goals, the Red Dragons closed the game with the last seven scores for the 23-2 final.
