Women's Lacrosse Conference Awards Announced
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the 2013 Women's Lacrosse All-Conference team and individual awards as voted on by the conference coaches.
2013 Women's Lacrosse All-Conference Team
Player of the Year Maria Di Fato
Maria Di Fato has been named the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year. Maria previously attended West Genesee High School. She is from Camillus, NY and is currently a senior, sport management major at Cortland. Di Fato was a leader in the SUNYAC conference for a variety of statistical categories. She was second in the conference for caused turnovers per game, averaging 2.17 a game. She led the SUNYAC in goals per game(3.50). Maria was third in the conference in the points per game category, averaging 4.50. During the 2013 season Di Fato accumulated 50 goals and 14 assists despite only playing 14 after missing some due to an injury. Di Fato was recently named to the 2013 SUNYAC Women’s Lacrosse All-Tournament Team. Maria added three goals, one assist, five groundballs, and four caused turnovers in Cortland’s 12-5 SUNYAC championship win over Geneseo. This season DiFato became only the second Red Dragon in school history to break the 200 career goals mark. She now has 233. She is also second in school history in most career points with 345 points.
Rookie of the Year: Erica Geremia
Erica Geremia has been named the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year. Geremia is a SUNY Cortland freshman from Camillus, NY. She previously attended West Genesee High School. Geremia was a breakout star during her first collegiate lacrosse season. Geremia led the SUNYAC in assists per game, averaging 2.90. She was fifth in the conference in the goals per game category (2.95). She was also a conference leader in points per game, averaging 5.85. Geremia concluded her first season with 55 goals, 56 assists, and 20 groundballs. Geremia contributed three goals and five assists in Cortland State’s 12-5 SUNYAC championship win over Geneseo.
Erica's impressive statistics have resulted in her topping national statistic charts. She holds the 16th spot in the nation with assists per game. In addition, she is ranked 14th in assists and 26th nationally for points per game. As a freshman, Geremia has already made her way onto the Cortland State record books. After one season she is third in Cortland’s women’s lacrosse history of most single season points with 111. She is also third in school history in the most single season assists category with 56. Erica Geremia most notably broke Cortland’s nearly 30 year old single-game assist record. She tallied eight assists when the Red Dragons beat St. Lawrence 15-5 on March, 21st. The previous school record was 7 assists, made by Beth Breen during a home game versus Clarkson in 1986.
Carly Ritchlin has been named the 2013 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Year. Ritchlin is underway with her 10th season as Geneseo women’s head lacrosse coach. The Knights made it to the State University of New York Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse finals, but lost the championship title to Cortland State. Ritchlin had three of her student-athletes earn SUNYAC All-Tournament Team honors. Despite Geneseo losing out on the SUNYAC automatic qualifier, they received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
This season, Ritchlin led Geneseo to a 5-3 conference record and a 12-5 overall record. Geneseo was ranked No. 3 in the SUNYAC. Geneseo was second in the conference in the goals per game category, averaging 14.25. The Knights were also third in the conference in points per game with 19.38. On the defensive end, Geneseo was second in the SUNYAC for goals against average, with 7.78. Prior to Geneseo, Ritchlin served one season as the part-time head women’s lacrosse coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
