Brandon Serio Named ECAC Rookie of the Year; Three Red Dragons on All-ECAC Team
Cortland freshman pitcher Brandon Serio (Bedford Hills/Fox Lane) has been selected as the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Div. III Upstate New York Baseball Rookie of the Year. In addition, three Red Dragons - senior outfielder Zack Graczyk (Carmel), junior first baseman Max Rosing (Rockville Centre/South Side) and junior designated hitter P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, CT) – have been chosen to the All-ECAC Upstate New York first team.
Serio posted a 5-1 record and 1.21 ERA in 11 appearances, eight as a starter, this spring. In 44 and two-thirds innings he allowed only 32 hits, 11 walks and six earned runs. He struck out 37 batters, and opponents batted only .195 against him. Among his victories was a 3-1 decision versus Amherst in the NCAA Div. III Regionals in which he gave up only four hits and one unearned run in seven and a third innings. Serio was also named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year during the season.
Graczyk led Cortland with a .408 batting average in 48 games. He registered 15 doubles, a triple, a homer, 31 RBI and 17 walks, and he led the Red Dragons with 13 stolen bases and 49 runs scored. Graczyk also made just one error in 91 chances in center field. His other awards this spring included D3baseball.com first-team All-American and SUNYAC Player of the Year.
Rosing batted .379 in 48 starts at first base. He hit 12 doubles and two homers and led the team with 45 RBI. Rosing also walked 15 times, was hit by pitches 15 times and scored 34 runs. Defensively, he made only two errors in 410 chances for a .995 fielding percentage.
Rinaldi hit .344 in 47 games, 45 as a starter. He saw playing time at designated hitter, catcher and in the outfield during the season. Rinaldi finished the year with five doubles, two triples, three homers, 42 RBI, 12 steals and 31 runs scored. He ranked second on the team in RBI and tied for second in homers.
Cortland finished the season 38-11 for its 19th 30-win season in the last 20 years. The Red Dragons won both the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season and postseason titles and made their 21st straight NCAA Div. III tournament appearance. Cortland finished second at the NCAA Regional in Auburn, N.Y., and tied for ninth nationally.
