Cortland's Badanes Repeats as Academic All-District Selection
SUNY Cortland senior pitcher Zachary Badanes (Syosset) has been named to the 2013 Capital One Division III Academic All-District Baseball first team for District 3. The team was chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Badanes was chosen to the all-district team for the second straight season. In Division III, District 3 encompasses all schools in New York State. Badanes was eligible for national Academic All-America honors by virtue of his first-team all-district selection, but was not named to the national team.
A biology major, Badanes entered the spring semester with a 3.98 overall grade point average. On the mound, Badanes finished 5-0 with a 1.69 ERA in nine games, four as a starter. He allowed only 26 hits and seven walks and struck out 33 batters in 32 innings. Badanes was named to NCAA Div. III Regional All-Tournament Team after striking out a career-high 12 batters in a 5-2 win over RPI.
Cortland finished the season 38-11 to reach the 30-win mark for the 19th time in the last 20 years. The Red Dragons won both the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season and postseason titles and made their 21st straight NCAA Div. III tournament appearance. Cortland finished second at the NCAA Regional in Auburn, N.Y., and tied for ninth nationally.
