SUNYAC selects first group of athletes of the week in 2015
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces the first seven athletes of the week of the new year. Three institutions had athletes represented with Plattsburgh taking home four of the seven honors.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Will Koenig (JR) Â
New Paltz (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley)
New Paltz junior Will Koenig ended up being one of the top sprinters at the Tampa Relay Carnival on Saturday, as the Hawks placed third out of four programs in the final overall team standings, which included two NCAA Division II squads. Koenig posted the second-fastest 50 freestyle split in the 8x50 freestyle relay field, as he clocked a 21.54 in the Hawks' fourth-place finish (3:08.54). He finished the meet by swimming a 49.45 100 freestyle split in the 400 freestyle relay, as New Paltz placed seventh (3:31.37). Koenig also swam a 1:55.51 200 freestyle leading off the Hawks' seventh-place 800 freestyle relay (7:43.47) and a 57.83 100 backstroke leading off New Paltz's fifth-place 400 backstroke relay (4:06.30).
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Samantha Granan (SR) Â
New Paltz (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt)
New Paltz senior Samantha Granan competed on a pair of relays that placed among the top four at the Tampa Relay Carnival on Saturday, as the Hawks placed fourth out of five teams in the final overall team standings, which included two NCAA Division II programs. Granan swam a 1:12.22 off a flat start in the 100 breaststroke to lead off New Paltz's 400 breaststroke relay, as the Hawks placed third with a time of 4:49.55. Later in the meet, she charted the second-fastest breaststroke split (1:11.37) among all competitors in the 400 medley relay, as the Hawks finished fourth with a standard of 4:17.66. New Paltz returns to action next on Friday, Jan. 16, at 4 p.m. when it hosts SUNY Cortland.

ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Paul Fregeau (FR) Â
Plattsburgh, Forward (Sylmar, Calif./Des Moines Buccaneers)
Paul Fregeau scored his first three goals of his collegiate career in a hat-trick performance Friday night against New England College in a 5-0 win. Saturday Plattsburgh battled #15 Amherst to a 0-0 tie to finish the opening weekend of the second semester 1-0-1. The freshman was also named to the Cardinal Winter Classic All-Tournament team.

ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Spencer Finney (JR)
Plattsburgh, Goalie (Pontypool, Ontario/Colgate University)
Spencer Finney pitched a 31 save shutout Saturday night in the Cardinal Winter Classic Championship game to help the Cardinals fight to a 0-0 draw against #15 Amherst. It was his first shutout of the season. He now currently leads the SUNYAC in save and win percentage at .942 and .929 percent respectively.

ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Mitchell Herlihey (FR) Â
Oswego, F (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean Raiders)
Herlihey nabbed four points this weekend as the Lakers went 2-0 and earned the title of champion at PathFinder Bank Oswego Classic Tournament. In the first game against Tufts University, the freshman had an assist on the Lakers first goal. During the championship game against Nazareth, Herlihey really shined, scoring one goal and assisting on two others to help Oswego capture the victory. The Ottawa native was not only selected to the All-Tournament team but was named MVP as well.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Reggie Williams (SR) Â
Plattsburgh, F (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton HS)
Senior Reggie Williams came up with one of the best games of his career to help the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team knock off previously undefeated Keene State 99-94 on the road. The Yonkers, N.Y., product amassed a team-high 22 points and completed his double-double bid by yanking down 10 rebounds. It's the third double-double for Williams this season and his second straight. The final-year man also contributed four blocked shots and a pair of steals to the Cardinals' win.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brittany Marshall (SR)
Plattsburgh, G (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy)
Senior captain Brittany Marshall submitted a fantastic two-game stretch to help the Cardinals go 1-1 at the San Juan Shootout. Pitted against a pair of top 25 opponents, Marshall helped the Cardinals upset No. 25-ranked Ithaca 76-66 by pumping in a game-high 22 points on 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) shooting. She also dished out four assists and grabbed six rebounds. Again No. 2-ranked Thomas More the following day, Marshall struck for a team-high 14 markers and shot 44.4-percent (4-for-9) from the field.
