SUNYAC names athletes of the week for the week ending Nov. 23
CORTLAND, N.Y. -Â The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has honored nine athletes as athletes of the week for the week ending November 23. These winter athletes have been recognized for outstanding performances in their respective sports during the past week.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Jacob Mullett (SO) Â
Oswego (Syracuse/West Genesee)
Swimming four different events this weekend winning two, Mullett helped his team defeat Brockport 158-140. The sophomore took first in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke with times of 1:03.37 and 2:24.22, respectively. Mullett also swam the second leg of the 200 yard medley relay helping the team earn a second place finish. Finally the Syracuse native took fourth in the 200 yard IM.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Sam Randall (FR)
Geneseo (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland)
Randall finished runner-up in both diving events during a quad meet at Hamilton with Ithaca and Hartwick on Saturday. His 314.05 on 3-meter was a season-high as was his 287.2 on 1-meter. Both were NCAA Zone-qualifying scores.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Abigail Max (SR)
Geneseo (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford)
Max won two events and swam on a winning relay to clinch three victories over host Hamilton, Ithaca and Hartwick on Saturday. Max won the 1,000 free (10:46.58) and the 500 free (5:16.46) and swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 free relay (3:36.71) that clinched a sweep of all three of the day's opponents, including an Ithaca decision by only six points that came down to the final relay.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Lydia Allen (SR) Â
Brockport (Cortland/Cortland)
Lydia Allen helped lead The College at Brockport women's swimming and diving team to victory over Oswego this past weekend as she swept the competition during the one and three meter diving events. She scored a 236.90 in the one meter event and set a personal best with a score of 223.45 in the three meter dive.

ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Nick Zappia (SR) Â
Cortland, Forward (Manlius, NY/Kingston Voyageurs)
Zappia scored four points on three goals and one assist in a pair of Cortland home SUNYAC wins last weekend. In a 4-2 triumph versus #13 Geneseo, Zappia scored the game-winning goal early in the third period and added an empty-net insurance goal with 52 seconds remaining to seal the win. In a 5-4 victory versus Brockport on Saturday, he tallied Cortland's first goal 32 seconds into the game and assisted on the Red Dragon's third goal, also in the first period. For the season, Zappia leads Cortland with 12 points on six goals and six assists.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Drew Weigman (FR) Â
Cortland, Goaltender (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones)
Weigman helped lead the Red Dragons to a pair of home SUNYAC wins last weekend. In a 4-2 win versus #13 Geneseo on Friday, Weigman stopped 41 shots, including all 16 he faced in the third period. He backed that up with 32 saves in a 5-4 victory versus Brockport on Saturday. He posted a 3.00 GAA, 73 saves and a .924 save percentage in the two games.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Dan Broderick (FR) Â
Cortland, Forward (White Plains, NY/New York PAL Islanders)
Broderick helped Cortland to a pair of home SUNYAC wins over the weekend, compiling five points on three goals and two assists. In a 4-2 victory versus #13 Geneseo on Friday, Broderick netted the Red Dragons' first goal of the game to pull Cortland to within 2-1 and assisted on the game-tying goal, both in the second period. He followed up with two goals and one assist in a 5-4 win versus Brockport on Saturday. He assisted on Cortland's first goal then netted back-to-back goals, all in the first period, to give the Red Dragons a 3-1 lead. Broderick has 11 points on a team-high seven goals and four assists this season.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK –Gordon Lyons  (SR) Â
Geneseo, F (Amherst, N.Y./Canisius)
Supporting Info:Â Lyons averaged 25.5 points and 15.0 rebounds to garner all-tournament honors at the Stephanie Tubbs-Jones Memorial Invitational at Case Western Reserve over the weekend. On Friday, he scored 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds opposite Wilmington (Ohio) before compiling 23 points and 15 boards versus Rose-Hulman on Saturday. He shot 70.8 percent from the field, hit 17-of-21 free throws and had 10 assists during the two-game set.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bailey Weigel (SR)
Potsdam, Guard (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East)
Bailey Weigel was instrumental for the Bears over the weekend averaging a double-double, 33 points and 25 rebounds. Competing in the Kevin Fee Roos Classic, Weigel recorded 19 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals in the heartbreaking, 42-43 loss to Alfred State College Saturday night. Potsdam faced SUNY Canton Sunday afternoon and Weigel finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and 1 block in the 68-64 win.
