    SUNYAC athletes of the week named for the week of Nov. 3-9

    CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its final fall athletes of the week and continues with the 2014-15 winter athletes of th week.

    FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jessica Caruana (JR)  
    New Paltz, Back (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East)

    New Paltz junior back Jessica Caruana was named to the All-Tournament Team after helping lead the Hawks to their third straight SUNYAC title. Caruana scored the game's first goal in the semifinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament against SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday, finding the back of the cage in the fifth minute in New Paltz's 3-2 win over the Red Dragons. She then registered another early goal, which proved to be the game-winner, in the SUNYAC Tournament final on Saturday against SUNY Geneseo, and she also added an assist in the Hawks' 4-0 win. For the season, Caruana is tied for second in the SUNYAC in assists (8), and she also boasts five goals and 18 points on the year. New Paltz (14-6) earned the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and visits Keene State College in the first round on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

    FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alayna Wageman (JR)  
    New Paltz, Goalkeeper (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North)

    New Paltz junior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP after helping lead the Hawks to their third straight SUNYAC title. She made one save against SUNY Oneonta in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday, as the Hawks edged the Red Dragons, 3-2. Wageman then made 10 stops and registered a shutout in the SUNYAC Tournament final against SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, helping New Paltz to a 4-0 victory. For the season, she is tied for the SUNYAC lead in shutouts (3) and ranks second in the conference in goals-against average (2.17). New Paltz (14-6) earned the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and visits Keene State College in the first round on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

    MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jake Sutherland (JR)  
    Oneonta, Forward (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee)

    Supporting Info: Sutherland was selected as the SUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory against SUNY Cortland in the conference championship game this past Saturday. The victory for the Red Dragons gave them their third SUNYAC title in the last four years while also earning its fourth straight NCAA Tournament berth. The Red Dragons are currently 18-0-2 and Sutherland has registered 19 points to date on eight goals and three assists. He also leads the team with five game-winning goals.

    MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Matthew Matteo (JR)  
    Oneonta, D (Millerton, NY/Webtuck)

    Matteo was a standout performer on defense for the Red Dragons during the recently completed SUNYAC Tournament, which Oneonta won for the third time in four years. The Red Dragons allowed only one goal in its two tournament games. Matteo was selected to the All-Tournament Team for his performance during the tournament, which included an assist versus SUNY Geneseo in the semifinals. The Red Dragons are currently 18-0-2 and are preparing for its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Matteo has started 15 games for Oneonta to date.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Leah Greene (FR)  
    Geneseo, F (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.)

    Greene headed home the game-winning goal with 59 seconds left to lead Geneseo past Cortland, 1-0, in the SUNYAC Championship game, Saturday. In the semifinals, Greene scored a goal and added two assists as the Knights' defeated Plattsburgh, 3-0. She now has 32 points on 13 goals (including five game-winners) and six assists in 20 games with Geneseo.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Karlee McCorry (SR)  
    Geneseo, B (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport)

    McCorry anchored Geneseo's backfield that recorded two shutouts in the SUNYAC Tournament en route to its 6th title in program history. In the tournament, McCorry helped the Knights hold their opponents to just six shots on goal combined.

    VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Becca Borquist (JR)  
    New Paltz, Outside Hitter (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck)

    Borquist earned SUNYAC Tournament MVP honors after helping lead the Hawks to their second-ever SUNYAC title and their first since 2009 over the weekend. She floored 17 kills, hit .412 and added 12 digs in New Paltz's 3-0 SUNYAC Tournament semifinal win over The College at Brockport on Saturday night. Borquist followed that up with another outstanding performance in the SUNYAC Tournament final on Sunday, notching 17 kills and 16 digs in the Hawks' 3-0 victory over SUNY Fredonia. For the season, she leads the SUNYAC in kills per set (3.74) and is tied for seventh in the conference in hitting percentage (.243). New Paltz (31-5) earned the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will begin regional play on Friday, Nov. 14.

    MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Kenny Athans (SR)  
    Geneseo (Victor, N.Y./Victor)

    Athans won two individual events and swam legs on two winning relays to lead Geneseo past SUNYAC-rival Fredonia, 163.5-128.5, Saturday. Individually, Athans won the 400 IM (4:20.36) and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.48). He was also part of the winning 200-medley relay (1:37.00) that established a new pool record as well as the first-place 200 free relay (1:28.40).

    MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Sam Randall (FR)  
    Geneseo (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland)
    Randall finished first on the 3-meter board (283.50) and finished second on 1-meter (278.35) with an NCAA Regional qualifying score as Geneseo defeated SUNYAC-rival Fredonia, 163.5-128.5, Saturday.

    FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Kristin Canjura  (SO)  
    Potsdam (Wilton, N.Y. /Saratoga Springs)

    Sophomore Kristin Canjura swam to two solo victories as the Bears women downed Norwich. She touched the wall first in the 1000 Free (11:55.06) and the 200 Backstroke (2:27.77).

    FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Heather Colby (SR)  
    Fredonia (Owego, N.Y./Owego)

    Colby was a double-winner Saturday at Geneseo. Her winning 1-meter score was 242.45 points. She recorded 260.65 points while winning the 3-meter.

    ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Rich Botting (JR)  
    Plattsburgh, D (Binghamton, N.Y.)

    Junior defenseman Rich Botting registered one goal and one assist for the No. 7-nationally ranked Plattsburgh State men's hockey team, helping the Cardinals to a 2-0-0 mark last week. The Binghamton, N.Y., product slung in the fourth goal of his career on Friday night in Brockport which would hold up to be the game-winner in a 1-0 triumph over the Golden Eagles. The following evening, Botting added his first assist of the 2014-15 campaign. His helper came on the Cardinals' fourth goal of the evening in a game Plattsburgh State would come back and win by a 7-4 tally.

    ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Brady Rouleau (SO)  
    Plattsburgh, GK (Fort Macleod, Alberta)

    In his first start collegiate start between the pipes, sophomore netminder Brady Rouleau turned aside all 22 shots he faced from Brockport to help the No. 7-nationally ranked Cardinals earn a 1-0 win against the Golden Eagles last Friday night. Rouleau, who spent his first season as a collegian at Quinnipiac, fought off a 6-on-5 rush by the Golden Eagles in the last 1:15 to preserve the win.

    ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Matt Quilty (FR)  
    Plattsburgh, F (Midland, Ontario)

    In an ice hockey battle which featured two of the top 10 teams in the nation, freshman Matt Quilty sparked the Cardinals' comeback effort by amassing one goal and a pair of assists in No. 7-nationally ranked Plattsburgh State's come-from-behind 7-4 triumph over No. 4-nationally ranked SUNY Geneseo on Saturday night. The first-year forward pumped in his first goal as a collegian in the second period before totaling both of his assists in the third period. The win was the Cardinals' first at Geneseo since the 2011-12 campaign and has Plattsburgh State sitting atop the SUNYAC standings.
