SUNYAC announces weekly awards to recognize winter athletes
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces weekly awards for winter athletes.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Jake Hewitt (FR)
Fredonia (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont)
Hewitt won the 200-yard butterfly at the Blue Devil Invitational with both a school and pool record time of 1:56.36. The previous mark of 1:56.75 was set in 2006. Also competed in seven other events -- three individual and four relays. Among the individual results, Hewitt finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (:53.98) and fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:35.21). He was also part of the second-place 400 medley relay (3:40.43), third place 800 free relay (7:28.68), fourth-place 200 medley relay (1:42.27), and fourth-place 400 free relay (3:20.67). Accounted for 80.5 team points of the Blue Devils' 576 team total, good for third place in the eight-team event.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK – Jeff Matter (SO)                      Â
Fredonia (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora)
Matter broke the Steele Hall Natatorium record in 1-meter springboard diving during the Fredonia Blue Devil Invitational. His winning score of 505.85 points was 19 points better than the previous pool record. He also finished second in 3-meter diving with a score of 468.05 points. Both totals are NCAA provisional qualifying scores for 11 dives.

FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Abigail Max (SR)
Geneseo (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford)
Max won four individual events as the Knights finished second to Division-I Cornell out of nine teams at the Ithaca Winter Invitational over the weekend. On Friday, she set a pool record and swam a NCAA B-Cut time to win the 500 freestyle (4:58.81) with the 11th-fastest time in D-III this season. On Saturday, she won the 100 back (57.78 - .19 off NCAA B-Cut) with the 15th-fastest time in the nation after also winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.55) with an NCAA B-Cut time. She finished the meet off on Sunday by winning the 100 free (52.39 - .25 off NCAA B-Cut). During the weekend, she also added legs to the second-place 400-free relay (3:32.93), second-place 200-free relay (1:37.30) and third-place 400-free relay (3:59.36).
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Miranda Fergus (JR)
Cortland (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Millbrook)
Fergus broke a 25-year-old school record for 3-meter diving (6 dives) with a winning score of 291.10 points at the Hamilton College Invitational. The previous school mark was 286.75 points by Laura Landry in 1989. Fergus also won the 1-meter diving event with a Hamilton pool-record score of 269.50 points.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Chris Raguseo (SO)
Oswego (Pickering, Ontario/Whithy Fury)
Raguseo notched four points in a two-win weekend for the Lakers, helping the team move to 7-1-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in the SUNYAC. The sophomore began the weekend scoring the eventual game-winning goal against No. 4/4 ranked Plattsburgh on Friday on the road. Raguseo continued to aide in the teams efforts during the following days game against Potsdam, recording an assist on each of Oswego's first three goals.

ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Matt Zawadzki (SO)
Oswego (Fort Mills, S.C./Nepean)
Zawadzki played every minute in net for the Lakers this weekend, helping Oswego secure to big conference victories. In the weekend's opening game against Plattsburgh on the road, the sophomore recorded 30 saves and only allowed one goal in a 3-1 win over the No. 4/4 ranked Cardinals. Zawadzki was a wall in the following days defeat of Potsdam as well, stopping 28 shots and only allowing a single goal. The Fort Mills, S.C. native concluded the weekend with a .967 save percentage.

ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Drew Weigman (FR)
Cortland (Annapolis, MD/Northern)
Weigman put up unprecedented save numbers in a 1-1 week for the Red Dragons this past weekend. In a 6-2 win at Potsdam on Friday, Weigman turned aside a then career-high 54 shots. He backed that up with a new career-best and school-record 65 saves in a loss at fourth-ranked Plattsburgh on Saturday, breaking the previous mark of 59 set during the 1998-99 season. For the two games, he recorded 119 saves and a .930 save percentage. For the season, he has a 5-3-1 record with a 3.43 GAA and a .921 save percentage. His 119 saves in a two game span are the most ever by a Red Dragon goaltender.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Patrick Modzelewski (JR)
Brockport (Brooklyn, N.Y./Msgr. McClancy)
 Patrick Modzelewski led The College at Brockport to two victories during the 49th annual Wendy's College Classic. He broke the Wendy's College Classic single game and tournament record for amount of three pointers made. During the tournament he made 20 altogether, while setting the single game record with 11 three pointers made against Nazareth. The 11 three pointers made also set a Brockport school record.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brittney Dumas (JR)
Cortland (Easton, Conn/Joel Barlow)
Dumas averaged 18.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for the Red Dragons. She registered 26 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and three assists in a win over Fredonia and finished with 17 points and six rebounds in a victory versus Buffalo State as Cortland opened 2-0 in SUNYAC play. During the Buffalo State game, Dumas reached the career 1,000-point mark based on two seasons at Hartwick as well as her current season at Cortland. Dumas opened the week with 12 points and 14 rebounds in a three-point loss to Ithaca. She has five double-doubles in seven games this season.
