SUNYAC selects winter athletes of the week for the week of Nov. 10-16
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) recognized nine athletes for performances in their respective sports during the week of November 10-16.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Kristian Tialios (JR) Â
Geneseo (Mount Tremper, N.Y./Onteora)
Tialios won three individual events, including a pool-record setting swim, while adding a leg to a victorious relay as the Knights took down visiting Cortland, 177-115, Saturday afternoon. Tialios touched the wall with the fastest 200 back time ever at Alumni Pool (1:55.47) to lead a top-three Geneseo sweep, while also registering winning performances in the 100 back (53.39) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.37). He also joined senior Kenny Athans, junior Andy Schunk and sophomore Josh Miller to win the 200 medley relay (1:38.05).
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Sam Randall (FR)
Geneseo (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland)
Randall won both diving events as the Knights defeated visiting Cortland, 177-115, on Saturday. He won 1-meter with a winning score and NCAA Zone qualifying score of 287.00 while his 3-meter score of 277.35 was also unbeaten.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Abigail Max (SR) Â
Geneseo (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford)
Max won three individual events and swam on a victorious relay to lead Geneseo to a 187-108 victory over visiting Cortland on Saturday. Max was victorious in the 100 backstroke (1:00.63), 200 backstroke (2:12.26) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.84) and joined junior Julie Holloway, senior Stephanie Wilcoxen and first-year Kaitlin Doherty to win the 400 free relay (3:41.95). Cortland finished runner-up to Geneseo at last year's SUNYAC Championships.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Miranda Fergus (JR) Â
Cortland (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Millbrook)
Fergus won both diving events in a dual-meet loss at Geneseo. She scored 267.90 points on the 1-meter board and 260.20 points on the 3-meter board.

ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Darren  Young (SO) Â
Morrisville, Forward (Woodstock, Ontario)
Young paced Morrisville State with a seven point weekend - posting one goal and six assists as the Mustangs swept Cortland 6-4 and 7-3 over the course of the weekend. He posted a goal and four assists on Friday before adding two additional assists on Saturday.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Jon Hall (JR)
Potsdam, Goalie (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit)
Hall posted a sub-3.00 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage in a 1-0-1 conference weekend for the Bears. He stopped 44 shots in a 4-4 draw with Fredonia on Friday night. Hall then made 37 more saves to help Potsdam down Buffalo State for the first time in two seasons.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Layne Martin (FR) Â
Morrisville, Forward (Binghamton, N.Y.)
Martin posted two goals and two assists in the sweep over Cortland on the weekend, netting two goals and an assist in the 6-4 win on Friday before adding another assist on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Ian Helps (FR) Â
Fredonia, Forward (Bronx, N.Y./Greater New York Academy)
Averaged 22.5 points and 14.0 rebounds in his first two collegiate games. The Blue Devils came away with one win and one loss at Allegheny College's Richards '08 Memorial Tip-Off Tournament. His 22 points and 19 rebounds against Pitt.-Titusville came in the win, 75-50.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ashley Wallace (SR) Â
Buffalo State, F (Lockport, NY/Starpoint)
The senior forward was named the MVP of the Betty Abgott Invitational after leading the Bengals to the title with wins over Thiel and Ohio Wesleyan. She averaged 16.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two victories. Wallace had 21 points and eight rebounds in the win over Thiel, and then had 11 points, 11 boards and three steals in the championship win over OWU.
