Matt Matteo honored with Fred Holloway Award
Oneonta's Matt Matteo has been named the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Soccer Academic Player of the Year and honored with the Fred Holloway Award. The Oneonta junior achieved the highest cumulative grade point average (minimum of 3.3 GPA) among the first and second All-Conference Teams with four semesters of college.
Matteo was named to the 2014 Men's Soccer All-Conference Second Team, while assisting in the Red Dragon's run to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament semifinals.
The Business Economics major has been named previously to the 2012-13 and 2013-14 SUNYAC All-Academic Teams for Fall sports, as well as the SUNYAC Commissioner's List for Fall 2013. The Millerton, NY native graduated from Webutuck High School.
Matteo was fourth on the team in minutes played for the NCAA semifinalists. The Oneonta program finished with a 21-1-2 record in 2014.
The Fred Holloway Award is named after T. Fred "Prof" Holloway who coached Men's Soccer at Cortland from 1936-1972. His teams recorded a combined record of 191-94-23 and had only two losing seasons in 35 years. His teams appeared in three NCAA tournaments and captured six SUNYAC Championships. "Prof" chaired the founding committee of the National Soccer Coaches Association, designed a statistical system for the selection of All America Collegiate Soccer players and in 1958 was selected by the members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America to receive their most coveted laurel, the Annual Honor Award. In 1987, Cortland dedicated it's soccer field in his honor. Holloway passed away in 1990.
