Three SUNYAC Athletes Named ECAC Player of the Week
Three State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week recipients have been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate/Metro Region. The College at Brockport’s Kevin Dorn (Dix Hills, NY) and Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY) and SUNY Cortland’s Natalie Zacpal (Islip, NY) have been selected by the ECAC as Player of the Week in their respective sports.
Sophomore Dorn has been named the ECAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. On Monday, Dorn was recognized as the SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring all three goals in a 2-0 conference weekend for The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team.
Against Buffalo State on Friday, Dorn scored a goal less than five minutes into the game to give Brockport an early lead. The goal proved to be all the scoring Brockport needed as the Golden Eagles dropped the Bengals 1-0. The goal was Dorn's third career game-winner and first goal of the season.
On Saturday against the Fredonia Blue Devils, Dorn once again provided all the scoring as the sophomore netted both goals in a 2-1 victory. The two goals were the first multi-goal game of Dorn's Brockport career.
Junior Gillette has been named the ECAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Gillette was named the SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
In two conference games over the weekend, Gillette tallied four goals, including her first career game-winner and her first career hat trick as a Golden Eagle. Gillette leads the SUNYAC in both points (19) and goals (8). The first-year member of the Golden Eagles has scored at least one point in seven of the team's eight games.
Gillette chipped in the game-winner at the 36 minute mark against Buffalo State on Friday to put Brockport up 2-1. The Golden Eagles went on to beat the Bengals 3-1. On the very next day, Gillette recorded her first hat trick against nationally ranked Fredonia. Gillette buried all three goals in the first half against the Blue Devils who came in ranked No. 22 after beating top ranked William Smith earlier in the week.
Senior Zacpal has been named both the SUNYAC and the ECAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 23. She is the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the second time this season – she also earned the award in the first week of September.
Zacpal hit over .500 in each of Cortland's four victories during SUNYAC East pool play in Cortland. She finished with a combined .571 attack percentage with 44 kills and only four errors in 70 attempts and averaged 3.4 kills and 1.2 blocks per set. She matched her career high with 16 kills in a four-set win over Oneonta and had 10 kills with no errors in a victory versus Plattsburgh.
