Plattsburgh Soccer Teams Raise Over $500 for Cystic Fibrosis
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s and women’s soccer teams hosted their first cystic fibrosis fundraising event on Wednesday, October 24, and raised over $500 for cystic fibrosis research.
“It is a great cause that is close to our hearts,” said junior Emily LaLone. “Everyone was really excited to do it.”
All proceeds from the event benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Light blue, which is the color of cystic fibrosis awareness in the North Country, was a prominent hue throughout the afternoon and evening. During each contest, players from the opposite team were busy handing out blue Gatorade and cookies with blue frosting while accepting donations for cystic fibrosis. In addition to general donations to the cause, the teams also sold tickets for a 50/50 raffle.
Both teams wore jerseys donated by Stadium Systems. The women were clad in white jerseys with blue writing and the men donned grey jerseys with blue writing. “Just Breathe,” the slogan for cystic fibrosis awareness was emblazoned on the jerseys as well. In addition to their special jerseys, the women’s team came out with blue face paint, ribbons and – in some cases – hair to show their support.
“We had a lot of fun and people were extremely supportive and giving,” said sophomore Ashley Pagano. “We are excited to make it larger next year.”
The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team played Norwich in its 2012 season finale and emerged victorious by a 5-1 tally. The men’s squad took part in its final regular season match, playing No. 18-ranked St. Lawrence to a 0-0 double-overtime draw.
The men’s team will begin its quest for a 2012 SUNYAC Tournament Championship on Friday (Nov. 2) at 11 a.m. The No. 1-seeded Cardinals will host the No. 4 seed SUNY Cortland in the first of two semifinal games set to take place at the Field House Complex.
