Geneseo leads after first complete day of SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. -Â The 2015 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off on Wednesday, February 18 with the women's 3 meter diving at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center. Fredonia's Meghan Bartlett took first place with score of 500.80 and 20 points. Miranda Fergus, Cortland, (score of 463.75, 17 points) took second, while Geneseo's Caroline Gardner placed third, with a score of 454.75 and 16 points.
Thursday's finals began with the women's 200 freestyle relay, where Geneseo broke their 2014 conference record with a 1:35.53 time. Brockport (1:35.83) and Cortland (1:38.52) followed in second and third respectively.
Cortland took the men's 200 freestyle relay with a 1:23.97 time, only .03 seconds ahead of Geneseo (1.24.00). New Paltz came in third with a time of 1:24.51.
The women's 500 freestyle went to Geneseo's Abigail Max with a time of 4:58.09. She had previously won this event in 2012 and 2013. In second place was Cortland's Krista Caputo with a time of 5:10.43. Geneseo's Sophie Defreitas came in third with a time of 5:12.21.
Men's 500 freestyle was won for the fourth straight year by Geneseo's John Nasky with a time of 4:34.96, which beat the meet record he set last year of 4:35.09. In second came New Paltz's Jack Spader with a 4:41.52 mark. In third place was Geneseo's Andy Schunk with a 4:44.00.
The women's 200 IM went to Melanie Melewski of Brockport, with a time of 2:10.71. Jenna Gibbons, Geneseo, 2:11.79 and Hailey Modelewski, Geneseo, 2:12.88 came in second and third.
The men's 200 IM went to Kenny Athans of Geneseo for the second year in a row. He recorded a 1:53.02, breaking his own conference and meet record of 1:53.36. Â Geneseo teammates, Kristian Tialios (1:54.85 and Lucas Santiago (1:56.71) finished second and third.
Taylor Schaffert of Brockport took the women's 50 freestyle with a time of 23.80. In second was Mary Jane Leja, Brockport, with a time of 24.11. Geneseo's Stephanie Wilcoxen placed third with a 24.16.
The men's 50 freestyle went to Connor Mergler, Buffalo State, as he put up a time of 21.03, .06 seconds ahead of Cortland's Reeve Callen (21.09). William Koenig, New Paltz, took third with a 21.25.
The men's 1 meter diving went to Geneseo's Samuel Randall, who finished with a score of 505.80 and 20 points. Fredonia's Arron Carlson (502.95, 17 pts) and Rafael Santiago (481.15, 16 pts) came in second and third.
The Geneseo ladies took first place in the 400 medley relay with a 3:55.05 time. Brockport finished in second with a time of 3:57.40. Oneonta took third place with a 3:58.34 finish.
The men's 400 medley relay was won by Cortland with a conference and meet record time of 3:23.82. Geneseo came in second with a 3:24.91 time, also finishing ahead of the previous conference and meet record time. Oneonta took third with a time of 3:30.27.
Geneseo leads both the men's and women's team rankings after the first full day of competition. Brockport and Fredonia follow on the women's side while Cortland and Fredonia currently sit second and third on the men's side.
The SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships continue tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
