    Geneseo Men Win Track and Field Championship

    Geneseo, NY - Two individual event titles, five of the top six runners in the 5,000 and six top eight finishers in the 1500 meter run propelled Geneseo's men's outdoor track and field team to its third consecutive SUNYAC Championship. Geneseo totaled 187 points to finish ahead of runner-up Cortland's 159 points.

    Buffalo State's Xavier Mateen, Fredonia's Nick Guarino and Brockport's Ray Lund each won a pair of events during the championships as Mateen won the 100 meters in an NCAA provisional time of 10.69 and the 200 meters in 21.81, Guarino posted SUNYAC meet records and NCAA provisional times in the 800 meters (1:51.69) and the 1,500 meters (3:50.36) and Lund won the discus with a toss of 42.77 meters and the hammer throw with an NCAA provisional toss of 53.52 meters.

    Geneseo's Lee Berube won the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:50.49 and placed second in the 1,500 with an NCAA provisional time of 3:52.37 and senior Mike McManus won the high jump for the Blue Knights by clearing 1.98 meters.
    Saturday's winners included Gino Bisceglia of Cortland in the 400 meters with an NCAA provisional and meet record time of 47.75, Carl Caughell of Fredonia won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.15, Cortland's Phill Wiltshire won the 400 hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 54.28, Fredonia's Josh Guarino won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:27.28, Mike Kelley of Fredonia won the triple jump with a distance of 14.17 meters, Justin Torres of Cortland won the shot put with a 15.26 meter mark and Plattsburgh's Ben Depo won the decathlon with an NCAA provisional score of 6,265.

    On Friday, junior Ryan Pericozzi won the pole vault for Cortland with an NCAA provisional and SUNYAC meet record height of 4.90 meters and junior Tomas Velasquez won the long jump for Cortland with an NCAA provisional distance of 7.16 meters. Junior Marlon Stewart of Buffalo State won the javelin with a mark of 53.47 meters and senior Mike Heymann of Plattsburgh won the final event of the day with an NCAA provisional and SUNYAC meet record time of 30:44.16 in the 10,000 meters.

    For Geneseo, junior Eddie Novara posted a second place, NCAA provisional time of 30:55.10 in the 10,000 meters, sophomore Tom Clark placed second in the 5,000 meters in 14:58.77, senior Greg Izzo ran second in the 400 hurdles in 55.06 and junior Colin Keenan (Aquinas) finished second in the high jump (1.93 m).

     

    Event-by-event Recap

    110-meter hurdles:
    Oneonta was the only school to have two finishers in the top eight, but it was Fredonia junior Carl Caughell who took the top spot with a time of 15.15. Oswego’s Daquan Coleman finished second (15.30) and the top Red Dragon finisher was freshman Jermaine Miller (15.43), who is also a diver on the men’s swim team.

    100-meter dash:
    Senior Xavier Mateen of Buffalo State became the third straight Bengal to win the event and he was joined by three other teammates in the top five.  Mateen clocked a NCAA provisional 10.69 with Fredonia’s Webster Thomas close behind at 10.82. Bengal’s Rawl Carew took third (10.975), Jalen Law finished fourth (10.978) and Rashawn Simpson was fifth (11.07).

    200-meter dash:
    Mateen won his second individual title of the meet with a time of 21.81 as Buffalo State finished 1-2-3 in the event. Jalen Law ran a 21.93 and Davon Rollins crossed in 22.02.

    400-meter dash:
    Cortland senior Gino Bisceglia ran a NCAA provisional and conference record time of 47.75, breaking the old mark from 2003. Bisceglia was followed by teammate Zak Farnham-Haskell in 48.67.
    400-meter hurdles: Cortland’s Phill Wiltshire claimed the top spot on the podium with a time of 54.28. Wiltshire edged out Geneseo’s Greg Izzo and Dustin Rabideau who took second and third in 55.06 and 56.13.

    800-meter run:
    The Fredonia State Guarino twins posted a 1-2 finish in the 800-meter, as defending champion Nick Guarino won in a new meet record time of 1:51.69. His brother Josh crossed the finish in a time of 1:54.36.

    1500-meter run:
    Nick Guarino posted his second win of the championship in a another meet record time of 3:50.36, breaking the old mark set by former Blue Devil Leonard Plunkett in 1989. Guarino already holds the conference record which he set in 2010.  The Geneseo Knights earned 29 points in the event with finishers 2-7. Junior Lee Berube posted an NCAA provisional time of 3:52.37 and Tom Clark finished third in 3:55.96.

    3000-meter Steeplechase: Josh Guarino posted a provisional time of 9:27.28 to win the event for Fredonia for the first time since 2007. Guarino already qualified for the NCAA meet with an automatic time of 9:03.34 on April 28th at the Penn Relays. Plattsburgh’s Ryan Millar and Geneseo Bill Juda finished second and third in 9:33.51 and 9:33.93, respectively.   

    5,000-meter run: Geneseo has five of the top six finishers in the 5,000 meter including a 1-2 finish. Junior Lee Berube defended his title with a time of 14:50.49, more than 20 seconds faster than his time from a year ago. Tom Clark clocked a 14:58.77 good for second place and Brockport’s Brad Frink was third in 15:01.59. Geneseo finishers 4-5-6 were Bobby Henchen, Mark Streb and Chris Mateer.

    10,000-meter run: Plattsburgh senior Mike Heymann won his third consecutive 10,000 meter title setting a new championship meet record in with a winning time of 30:44.16. After 25 laps, Heymann finished 11 seconds ahead of Geneseo’s Eddie Novara (30:55.10) and over a minute faster than third place Plattsburgh’s James Biondi (31:50.46).
    4x100-meter relay: Buffalo State broke a nine year old meet record in the 400 meter relay with a winning time of 41.50. It beat the previous mark, also set by Buffalo State and current assistant coach Markus Allen by eight-tenths of a second. Xavier Mateen teamed up with Rawl Carew, Jalen Law and Rashawn Simpson. Plattsburgh took second (42.50) and Geneseo finished third (43.04).

    4 x 400-meter relay: Cortland set the sixth new track meet record with a time of 3:16.75 as the Red Dragons defended their 1600 meter relay. The quartet included individual winners Phill Wiltshire and Gino Bisceglia from earlier in the day and Eric Banks and Zak Farnham-Haskell.
    Plattsburgh and Geneseo finished second and third, respectively.
    Javelin: Junior Marlon Stewart had a throw of 53.47 meters to win the Javelin title for Buffalo State for the first time since 2005. Mike Hite of Fredonia threw 51.44 and Michael Belluzzi was third (49.91).

    High jump:
    Geneseo senior Mike McManus won this second outdoor high jump title in three years with a height of 1.98 meters. McManus was also the 2011 indoor high jump champion. Teammate Colin Keenan cleared 1.93 meters for second place and Plattsburgh sophomore Dustin Scott completed the top three with height of 1.88 meters.

    Pole vault:
    Junior Ryan Pericozzi continued the Cortland dominance in the pole vault as the Red Dragons won the event for the ninth straight year. Pericozzi cleared a winning height of 4.90 meters. Runner-up Broncho Rollins of Fredonia also cleared 4.90 meters but earned second place on the tiebreak. The height of 4.90meters is a new meet record, breaking the old mark set in 1997 by Cortland’s Bill Shuren.

    Long jump:  
    The Cortland Red Dragons jumped to four of the top eight places led by junior Tomas Velasquez with a leap of 7.16 meters. Teammate Tim Scheftic claimed second with a jump of 7.11 meters and Josh Daves was fourth (7.00m). Indoor long jump champion Nwana Okafor finished third (7.02m).

    Triple jump:
    Senior Mike Kelley wonFredonia’s first outdoor triple jump title in 10 years with a distance of 14.17 meters. Buffalo State’s Jerome Wilson also leapt 14.17 meters but lose on the tie-breaker. Cortland’s PJ Flynn and Kenny Sinclair finished third and fourth.
    Hammer: Brockport won the hammer throw for the sixth straight year as senior Ray Lund claimed his second straight individual title with a distance of 53.52 meters. Cortland’s Tyler Prendergast was the runner-up with a toss of 45.69 meters.

    Shot put:
    A Cortland athlete won the shot put for the first time in eight years, as sophomore Justin Torres threw a distance of 15.26 meters. Jonathan Jones of Buffalo State finished second with a heave of 15.15 and Golden Eagle Ray Lund completed the top three with a toss of 15.09 meters.

    Discus:
    Brockport’s Ray Lund won his second title of the meet with a distance of 42.77 meters in the discus. It is the fourth straight year a Golden Eagle has won the event and second for Lund who reclaimed his title from 2009. Cortland’s Justin Torress finished second (41.22) and Geneseo Zach Markel was third (39.90).
    Decatholan: Plattsburgh sophomore Ben Depo won his second straight decatholan with 6,265 points. Depo won seven of 10 events, battling with Fredonia’s Spencer Lefort (5992) throughout the two days. The 6,265 points by Depo is an NCAA-provisional standard and is currently good for eighth best in Division III this year.
