Abbott Named to Prestigious 2012 Tewaaraton Award Watch List
Cortland senior midfielder Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga Central) has been named to the initial 2012 Tewaaraton Award Watch List by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. Abbott is one of 53 female players overall and just one of three Division III student-athletes represented on the list, which consists of the top lacrosse players across all three divisions of collegiate lacrosse and highlights the early hopefuls for the 2012 Tewaaraton Award honors.
The Tewaaraton Award was formally established in August, 2000 with the inaugural presentation taking place at The University Club of Washington, D.C., in June, 2001. Honoring the Native American heritage, the Tewaaraton Trophy symbolizes lacrosse's centuries-old roots in Native American history. Tradition dictates that each year the award celebrates one of the six tribal nations of the Iroquois Confederacy: the Mohawk, Cayuga, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca and Tuscarora.
Today, the Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the nation's top male and female collegiate lacrosse players for their extraordinary achievements on the field. The Watch List will be pared down three more times until the top-10 male and female finalists are named in May.
Last season, Abbott earned first team All-America honors after scoring a school-record 138 points on 62 goals and a school-record 76 assists. She is currently Cortland's career scoring leader with 311 points on 185 goals and a school-best 126 assists.
