Six Players, One Coach Selected to North-South Senior Game
Six SUNYAC players have been selected to participate in the 2012 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) North-South Senior All-Star game. All six players will play for the North team and will be coached by Cortland's fourth-year head coach Kathy Taylor.
The game will take place on June 16 at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pa.
All three of SUNY Cortland's women's lacrosse seniors – midfielder Lindsay Abbott, attacker Erin Kollar and midfielder Jordan Miller – have been selected to compete. Buffalo State will be represented by Kendyl Clarkson and Jamie Handley, and Dayna Piraino will represent Brockport.
Abbott finished this season with 71 goals and 59 assists for 130 points. She led the team and ranked second nationally in points scored and was the team leader and fifth nationally in points scored. Abbott finished as Cortland's career leader with 256 goals, 185 assists and 441 total points. She completed her career ranked third in NCAA Div. III history in points scored.
Kollar recorded 65 goals and 19 assists for 84 points. She ranked third on the team in both goals scored and total points. In four seasons, Kollar totaled 127 goals and 32 assists for 159 points.
Miller registered eight goals, two assists, 15 ground balls, eight draw controls and six caused turnovers in 22 games. In four seasons, she played in 82 games, all as a starter, and had career totals of 50 goals and 12 assists for 62 points.
Taylor led Cortland to a 20-2 record, its second straight NCAA Div. III tournament semifinals and its fourth consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title. In her four seasons, Taylor has a combined record of 72-14 (.837) and has guided the Red Dragons to four NCAA tournaments.
Clarkson was named All-Region for the third-consecutive season. Her 88 assists set a new school record and led the nation. She also tied an NCAA Division III single-season record and set the new national record with 240 career assists. She added 35 goals this season for 123 points, the second-highest single-season total in school history. Her 385 points ranks her second on Buffalo State's career list and ninth on the all-time DIII list.
Handley made the team as a defender after anchoring a Bengals' team that allowed just 12.36 goals-per-game. She captured All-Region honors in each of her two seasons as a Bengal after transferring from Onondaga Community College. She led the Bengals with 51 ground balls and was second on the team with 17 caused turnovers. She also registered 42 draw controls.
Piraino led the Golden Eagles with 67 points and 36 assists on the year in helping guide Brockport to a 10-5 record and a berth in the SUNYAC Tournament.
Other programs represented on the North Squad include Trinity, Amherst, Bowdoin, Bates, Endicott, Colby, Wesleyan, Middlebury, Skidmore and Hamilton.
