Six Named All American by IWLCA
Six SUNYAC women’s lacrosse players have added All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) to their 2012 accolades. The IWLCA honored a total of 48 student-athletes in Division III with a selection on one of the All-American teams.
SUNY Cortland senior midfielder Lindsay Abbott and junior midfielder Maria Di Fato and Fredonia senior defender Megan Metielski were first team selections. Buffalo State senior attack Karen Shaddock was the lone second-team honoree while Cortland junior defender Natalie Melaniff and Oneonta senior attack Rebecca Monteith each garnered third-team honors.
Abbott finished her 2012 campaign with 71 goals and 59 assists to lead the SUNYAC with 130 points. She led Cortland in assists and total points, ranked second with 46 draw controls, and was third with 23 caused turnovers and 48 ground balls. Abbott ranked fifth nationally in Div. III in total assists and second in total points. She concluded her career with 441 points, the third-highest total in Div. III history. Abbott was named the SUNYAC Player of the Year for the second straight season as she guided the Red Dragons to the SUNYAC regular-season and tournament titles and a final-four appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament where Cortland ended its season with a 20-2 record.
Di Fato was Cortland's leader with 68 goals scored and third with 28 assists for 104 points. She topped the Red Dragon squad with 62 caused turnovers and 68 ground balls and scored four game-winning goals. Di Fato ranked third nationally in Div. III with 2.8 caused turnovers per game.
Mietelski is the first All-American in Fredonia program history. She started all 19 games as the Blue Devils made their first NCAA tournament appearance. Mietelski broke the Fredonia State single-season record for draw controls (72) finishing her career second all-time in the category with 172. She also added a career-best 35 caused turnovers and became the all-time Blue Devil leader in the category with 102.
Shaddock captured second-team All-America honors after she assaulted the Buffalo State and NCAA Division III record books. She led the nation with 108 goals and 150 points, setting new school records in each category. Her 150 points were the fourth most in a season in Division III history, and her 108 goals tied for the third most ever. She finished her career with 457 points, also a school record and the second-highest total in DIII history. She also leads the Bengals with 103 draw controls and 20 caused turnovers.
Melaniff, a starter in all 22 games, scored seven goals and was the team leader with 62 draw controls. Her statistics also included 29 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
Monteith set the Oneonta single season record for goals (75) and points (103) this spring. She ranked tenth in Division III for goals per game (4.69). In addition to her offensive output, Monteith also led the team with 60 ground balls and 34 caused turnovers. She was tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals while being second with 54 draw controls.
