Three Women's Lacrosse Teams Selected for NCAA Tournament
Three SUNYAC women’s lacrosse teams will participate in the 2012 NCAA tournament and all three will host a first round regional game on Wednesday, May 9. Cortland earned the automatic bid by virtue of winning the SUNYAC championship and will be making its 14th straight and 16th overall appearance. Buffalo State and Fredonia both earned an at-large selection and will be making its first-ever appearance.
The SUNY Cortland women's lacrosse team will host Castleton State College of Vermont in an NCAA Division III tournament first-round game on Wednesday, May 9, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time has been announced as 3 p.m. by the NCAA. Cortland enters the game with a 17-1 record and Castleton is 12-6.
Last season, Cortland advanced to the Division III “final four”. Cortland has played in at least the NCAA second round each of the last 13 years, including “final four” showings in 2011 and 2006 and quarterfinal appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
The Bengals will open the tournament on Wednesday at home against Springfield (11-7) at 3 p.m. Buffalo State is 13-6 overall and advanced to just their second-ever SUNYAC title game, before falling 12-5 against nationally-ranked No. 2 Cortland on Saturday. Buffalo State had won five-straight games prior to the loss.
Fredonia will host St. John Fisher College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils are 14-4 on the season after making their second SUNYAC tournament where they lost to Buffalo State in the SUNYAC semifinals. Fredonia has set a single-season record for wins, including nine-straight wins during the regular-season before losing an 8-7 decision to Cortland.
