Abbott selected as SUNYAC's NCAA Woman of the Year nominee
SUNY Cortland’s Lindsay Abbott has been selected as the 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, as announced by the conference office.
Abbott joins an elite group of student-athletes from across NCAA Division I, II and III nominated for the award. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award is presented annually to a graduating student-athlete who has distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
Abbott earned IWLCA All-America honors for the fourth time. She's been a first-team selection as a junior and senior and was a second-team honoree as a freshman and sophomore. This spring, Abbott registered 71 goals and 59 assists for 130 points. She led the team and ranked second nationally in points scored and was the team leader and fifth nationally in points scored. She also ranked second on the team with 46 draw controls and third with 48 ground balls.
Abbott finished as Cortland's career leader with 256 goals, 185 assists and 441 total points. She completed her career ranked third in NCAA Div. III history in points scored.
The native of South Onondaga, NY graduated this spring with a degree in Kinesology and Exercise Science.
Abbott has left her mark on the Cortland community through numerous service projects and volunteer efforts. She is an active member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation where she volunteers individual hours in honor of her cousins who were diagnosed at birth and has spearheaded her teams’ involvement with fundraising efforts for the Foundation. In addition, Abbott takes part in Relay for Life as a team captain and works with Special Olympics through the national Division III partnership.
In order to be eligible for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, nominees must have completed their intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2011-12 competitive season and received her undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the summer 2012 term, and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
In August, the top 10 honorees per division will be announced for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. In September, the field of 30 semifinalists will be narrowed to three per division. The top 10 honorees and the nine finalists from Divisions I, II, and III will be honored and the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year winner announced at a dinner in Indianapolis in October.
