Buffalo State Knocked Out by Trinity at NCAA Regionals
HARTFORD, Conn.—Buffalo State (14-7) scored six goals on just nine shots, but could not stop the No. 5-ranked team in the country Trinity College (18-1), as the host Bantams rolled to a 17-6 victory in the second round of the NCAA playoffs today, ending the Bengals’ season.
Karen Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) had a team-high three points on two goals and one assist for Buffalo State, concluding the season with 108 goals. Kendyl Clarkson (Painted Post/Corning West) picked up a pair of assists, equaling the Division III record for assists in a season with 88. Niki Paulhardt (Hanover, MN/Oswego) added a goal and an assist, and Becca Martinez (Syracuse/Corcoran), Ashley Caporizzo (Liverpool/CNS) and Jenn Shaddock (Corning/Corning East) had a goal apiece for the Bengals.
Trinity jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 4:35 into the game, but the Bengals answered with two quick goals of their own to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Bantams controlled the remainder of the opening half, however, and led 10-3 at the intermission. The Bengals scored the first goal of the second half, but Trinity responded with a 3-0 run, thwarting any hopes of a comeback, and held Buffalo State at bay the rest of the way.
The Bantams controlled every statistical category, outshooting the Bengals 31-9, while maintaining a 14-6 edge in ground balls and a 17-7 advantage in draw controls. Colleen George (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) made 12 saves between the pipes for Buffalo State.
Buffalo State’s senior class of Karen Shaddock, Clarkson, Mariah DeBolt (Waterloo/Waterloo), Jamie Handley (Auburn/Auburn), Paige Ottaviano (Port Colborne, ON/Lakeshore Catholic), Brittany Nagowski (Lancaster/Lancaster) and Renee Glass (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville) closes out its four-year run with a record of 52-20.
