Cross country teams featured in USTFCCCA preseason rankings
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has released the preseason regional and national rankings for Division III cross country. The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has several teams represented as top 10 in the Atlantic Region including three No. 1 rankings as well as four teams ranked in the top 20 nationally.
The Geneseo women are ranked 10th in the nation while the men are ranked 13th. Both teams are ranked on top at No. 1 in the Atlantic Region. They are looking to stay on top as head coach Mike Woods goes into his final season before retirement. They return all seven men and six of seven women from last year's top-20 teams. Last season at the NCAA Championships the Knights finished 15th in men's and 16th in women's. They look to be led by seniors Cohen Miles-Rath and Cassie Goodman after Miles-Rath finished 57th and Goodman finished 84th in the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships
Â
Cortland men are ranked 19th in the nation and share the top spot with Geneseo as they are tied for the No. 1 spot in the region on the men's side. They are looking to defend their regional title as they won twice in the last five years (2013, 2009). The Red Dragons finished 13th in the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships. They bring back two-time All-American senior Nick Marcantonio who finished 23rd in the National Championships. The Cortland women's team also ranked in the top 10 at No. 7. They look to be led by junior Kerri Culhane who earned all-region honors last season.
Â
Oneonta women are ranked 14th in the nation while and No. 3 in the region while the men's team stands at No. 7 in the region. Last year the men's team had their best finish in program history at the Atlantic Region Championship at seventh overall. They don't look to stop there as they return two of their runners who finished top 50 in Regionals - Charles Remillard (39th) and Mike Didas (41st). The women's team also had their best finish in program history as they competed for a National Championship and placed 25th. Although losing All-American Danielle Kennedy, they bring back depth with many returners who gained confidence with the trip to the National Championship round.
Â
The Fredonia men's team is the final SUNYAC team ranked in the Atlantic Region at No. 10. Last year at the 2013 Atlantic Regional they placed 10th. They return their top finisher in the regionals Chris Shartrand at 40th overall.
Â
New Paltz women's team is ranked at No. 8. In the 2013 SUNYAC Championships they finished in fourth place. They also finished in 12th at the Atlantic Regional Championships making it their best finish in school history. They return four of seven runners who participated in both the SUNYAC Championship and the NCAA Regionals.
Â
SUNYAC schools will begin competition Saturday.
