SUNYAC announces athletes of the week for the week of Oct. 20-26
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has picked its final fall athletes of the week prior to championship week and its first Male and Female Swimmer and Diver of the Week for winter 2014-15. Fall Athletes of the Week will continue up until the SUNYAC Championship games.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Aaron GrangerÂ
Cortland, FR (Delevan, N.Y./Pioneer)
Granger was Cortland's top finisher at the non-team scoring Cornell John Reif Memorial Run with a ninth-place time of 18:03 over 5,000 meters. The race consisted primarily of runners from Div. I schools Cornell and Syracuse along with Cortland.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Marina PettinicchiÂ
Cortland, SR (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport)
Pettinicchi finished in 22nd place to lead Cortland's runners at the Cornell University John Reif Memorial Run. She finished the 52-runner race in 20:40 over 5,000 meters. The non team-scoring race consisted primarily of runners from Div. I schools Cornell and Syracuse along with Cortland.
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Cara Stafford
Geneseo, FR, Â F (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay)
Stafford scored both goals in the Knights' 2-1 victory at Oswego on Saturday in a match that decided the fourth and final playoff spot for the SUNYAC Tournament. She also scored a goal in Geneseo's 5-1 victory at Houghton on Wednesday.
FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Dayna Mercer
Geneseo, JR, GK (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay)
Mercer registered 13 saves in the Knights 2-1 victory over Oswego on Saturday in a match that decided the fourth and final playoff spot for the SUNYAC Tournament. She stopped six Laker shots in the first half before making seven in the second half to preserve the victory. She also was only called upon to make one save in Wednesday's 5-1 victory at Houghton.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jason GonzalezÂ
New Paltz, JR, F (Woodside, N.Y./High School:Â St. Francis Prep)
Gonzalez registered a hat trick to lift the Hawks over Fredonia 4-1 on Saturday, giving New Paltz its first conference win of the season. Gonzalez scored in the 25th minute, the 65th minute and the 90th minute and added an assist for a seven-point outing. In 2014, Gonzalez finished with a team-high 10 goals, 23 points and 47 shots and ranks in the top-10 in the SUNYAC in goals, goals per game, points, points per game, shots and shots per game.
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nick DaviesÂ
Potsdam, SO, GK (Webster, N.Y. /Webster Thomas)
Davies made nine saves in a tie with Brockport on Friday and then stopped six shots in the Bears' playoff-clinching 1-0 win over Geneseo on Saturday. Davies is now tied for first on the program's all-time wins list with 14 victories.
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Katie Kleine

Supporting Info:Â Kleine had two goals and one assist in a pair of SUNYAC home wins -- 3-1 over Oneonta and 2-1 over New Paltz -- as the Blue Devils nailed down the No. 3 SUNYAC seed, which leads to a home game Saturday vs. Buffalo State. Kleine leads the Blue Devils in goals (7), assists (4), and points (18). Her career totals in all three categories rank among the Top 10 in Blue Devil history: No. 6 in goals with 22, tied for No. 1 in assists with 19, and No. 4 in points with 63.

Yokopovich played the important sweeper role in a pair of SUNYAC home wins -- 3-1 vs. Oneonta and 2-1 vs. New Paltz. The seven shots attempted by Oneonta was the fourth-lowest total allowed by the Blue Devils this season. Oneonta's four shots-on-goal is also the fourth-lowest total against Fredonia this fall. Yokopovich plays an integral role on Blue Devil set pieces. She has started all 16 games. The Blue Devils are 8-7-1 overall and finished 5-3-1 in the SUNYAC regular season in order to nail down the No. 3 seed and a home game Saturday vs. Buffalo State.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Janine PatoraÂ
Cortland, FR, OPP/OH (Salt Point, N.Y./Arlington)
Patora helped lead Cortland to a 3-0 SUNYAC weekend as the Red Dragons clinched the third seed for the conference tournament. She registered a career-high 21 kills and added 15 digs, three aces and three blocks in a five-set win over Buffalo State. She also had 18 kills, four aces and nine digs in a four-set win over Plattsburgh and 12 kills and six digs in a sweep versus Brockport. She finished the weekend with 51 kills (4.3 per set) and a .298 attack percentage.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Lucas SantiagoÂ
Oneonta, JR (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam)
Santiago won two individual events to help lead Oneonta to a 133-105 victory to open the dual-meet season against Oswego. He won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:04.58 and won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.46. He also swam the third leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay to open the meet.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Jeff MatterÂ
Fredonia, SO (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora)
Has won two of four diving competitions in the first two weeks of the season. Was the 3-meter winner with 282.35 points Oct. 18 vs. Ithaca. Also won the 3-meter with 281.65 points Oct. 25 vs. Niagara. Off the 1-meter board, was fourth at Ithaca (265.55) and second vs. Niagara (263.65).
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Sam RokosÂ
Fredonia, JR (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg)
Rokos is 2-for-2 in the 200-yard freestyle with winning times of 2:00.22 vs. Ithaca and 1:59.32 vs. Niagara. Her early-season success also includes a 100-yard freestyle win at Ithaca (55.50 seconds), a leg in the winning 200-yard freestyle relay at Ithaca (1:41.87), and a second-place finish vs. Niagara in the 500-yard freestyle (5:26.89). Her 500 time vs. Niagara was appreciably faster than her fourth-place time (5:38.60) at Ithaca. She was also part of the Blue Devils' second-place 400-yard freestyle relay vs. Niagara (3:54.06).
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Meghan BartlettÂ
Fredonia, SO (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown)
Was a double winner Oct. 25 vs. Niagara with 256.75 points off the 1-meter board and 261.35 off the 3-meter. She also won the 1-meter Oct. 18 at Ithaca with 225.85 points. Finished second in the Ithaca 3-meter with 241.05 points. Her 1-meter score vs. Niagara is an NCAA Division III provisional qualifier.
