SUNYAC weekly honors announced for week ending Sept. 7
CORTLAND, NY - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the weekly honorees for the week ending Sept. 7. Nine athletes from five different institutions have been named based on their accomplishments in their respective sports this week.
Female Runner of the Week
Sarah Swertfeger - Brockport
Sarah Swertfeger was the top SUNYAC finisher and was fourth of 189 at at the Oswego Pat Peterson Ivitational with a career best time of 18:57 over 5,000 meters.
Male Runner of the Week
Mike Scher - New Paltz
Mike Scher placed second overall at Saturday's Ron Stonisch Invitational 6K hosted by Vassar with his time of 20:09.18, averaging 5:24 a mile. Scher helped the Hawks to their second straight win at the Vassar Invite, accruing 30 points. This is the second-consecutive top-two finish for Scher, as he won the Stevens Two-Miler last Friday night.
Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week
Alayna Wageman - New Paltz
New Paltz junior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman posted a shutout, made 11 saves and earned two wins in a 2-0 week for the Hawks. On Wednesday against William Paterson University, she stopped five shots en route to her second straight shutout, helping lead New Paltz to a 3-0 victory. She made a season-high six saves on Saturday, as the Hawks downed 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifier Utica College, 4-2, after trailing, 2-0, at the half. For the year, she is tied for the SUNYAC lead in save percentage (.867) and leads the conference in goals-against average (0.67) and shutouts (2). New Paltz (3-0) next visits Montclair State University on Wednesday, Sept. 10, for a 7 p.m. contest.

Alyssa Bassett - Morrisville
Bassett recorded her first goal, and first collegiate hat trick to lead Morrisville State to a 5-3 win over Wells College on Sunday. All three of her tallies came in the first half, two in a span of less than two minutes. Bassett was moved from defense a year ago to the forward line this season.
Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Casey Sullivan - Brockport
Junior goalie Casey Sullivan had two double overtime shut outs against the No. 19 and No. 20 ranked teams in Division III.

Gino Scardino - New Paltz
Supporting Info: In Saturday's 3-1 win over Farmingdale State in the Vassar Invitational, Scardino scored twice (his first career goals) on two shots off the bench, handing the Hawks their first win of 2014. The freshman tallied his first goal in the 39th minute and his second occurred in the 66th minute.
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Mercedes Kendall - Plattsburgh
Mercedes Kendall has anchored the Cardinals defense that has not allowed a goal in three straight games. Kendall has a team high 315 minutes logged already this season. Plattsburgh State went 2-0 one the week only allowing six total shots with just two of those shots being on goal.
Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Erin Froehlich - Geneseo
Erin Froehlich scored the game-winning goal with eight seconds left in regulation at St. John Fisher last Saturday to lead the Knights to a 1-0 victory. With the win, the squad improves to 4-0 on the season and the goal was Froehlich's first of the year.
Volleyball Player of the Week
Katy Herbst - New Paltz
New Paltz senior libero Katy Herbst averaged 5.00 digs per set across 13 sets played in a 4-0 week for the Hawks, earning Tournament MVP honors at the Vassar Tournament. By virtue of going 4-0 at the event, New Paltz won the Vassar Tournament title. Herbst also averaged 0.69 service aces per set and 1.08 assists per set for the week. She joined the 30-dig club against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday, totaling 33 digs and adding eight assists in the Hawks' five-set win over MIT. Later that evening, Herbst defended 17 digs and floored five service aces in New Paltz's 3-2 triumph over Ramapo College. In Saturday's first match, a 3-0 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent, she totaled eight digs, and in the team's final match of the tournament on Saturday, Herbst collected seven digs in a 3-0 victory over host Vassar College.
