SUNYAC athletes of the week picked for the week ending Oct. 12
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Confere (SUNYAC) has picked its athletes of the week for the week ending October 12. Nine athletes from six different institutions were honored.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEKÂ - Nick Marcantonio
Cortland, SR (Glen Falls, N.Y.)
Marcantonio finished second out of 177 runners at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh. He ran the 8,000-meter course in 25:12, six seconds off the winning time, and helped Cortland finish second out of 14 schools in the final team standings.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Katie EhmannÂ
Plattsburgh, SR (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston HS)
Plattsburgh State senior Katie Ehmann turned in a fifth-place finish over 5K in a time of 17:58 to help the Cardinals' women's cross country squad take a third-place finish out of 16 teams at the Hamilton Invitational last Saturday. It was the first top-five finish of the year for the Kingston, N.Y., product.
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Andrea Day
Oneonta, SR, F (Green, N.Y.)
In a 1-1 week for Oneonta, Day collected six points on two goals and two assists. She scored the lone goal last Wednesday against Hamilton before scoring the game-winning goal and adding two assists in a 3-2 victory this past Saturday at Bates College.
FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sarita CharapÂ
Oswego, FR, GKÂ (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City)
Charap, one of the nation's leading goalies, continued her stellar play in a 1-1 week for Oswego. On Tuesday, the freshman held St. John Fisher College's nationally-ranked scoring offense to just two goals in a 2-0 defeat, well below the Cardinals' 31st-ranked 3.17 goals per game. Charap managed to slow the Fisher offense with 12 saves, just one shy of her career-best outing. The following day, Charap collected her second shutout of the season, holding host Elmira College scoreless with six saves in a 3-0 victory.

MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ben Firlit
Potsdam, JR, F (South Glens Falls, N.Y.)
Firlit scored four goals in the Bears 1-1 weekend in SUNYAC play. He scored one against No. 5 Oneonta State and then followed it up with his first career hat trick against SUNY New Paltz. Firlit now has a career-high and team-leading 10 goals this season, which ties him for the SUNYAC lead.

MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Casey Sullivan
Cortland, JR, D (Lansing, NY/Lansing)
Sean Streb helped the Red Dragons (8-2-1, 3-0-1 SUNYAC) post a 2-0 record over the weekend as Cortland extended its unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games. In a 1-0 win vs. Plattsburgh on Friday, Streb helped anchor a defense that recorded its seventh shutout of the season and scored the game-winning goal on a header with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation. In Cortland's 3-1 victory versus Potsdam on Saturday, Streb registered two shots from his defender position as the Red Dragons kept the Bears off the scoreboard until the 83rd minute.
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Danielle TyrrellÂ
Cortland, JR (Vestal, NY/ Vestal)
Tyrrell helped lead the Red Dragons (5-6-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) to a pair of road conference wins over the weekend. After Cortland earned a 1-0 victory at Buffalo St. on Friday, Tyrrell registered her first career hat trick at Cortland, scoring all three of the Red Dragons' goals in a 3-0 win at Fredonia on Saturday. Tyrrell netted goals in the 19th, 27th and 68th minutes to pace Cortland. She has eight points on four goals for the season.
WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Renee Walker
Cortland, FR, GK (Coram, N.Y.)
Walker posted a pair of shutouts over the weekend as the Red Dragons (5-6-1, 4-1-1 SUNYAC) captured a pair of conference road wins. In a 1-0 victory at Buffalo St. on Friday, Walker stopped eight shots. She followed up with a four-save shutout, her third consecutive and fourth on the season, in a 3-0 win at Fredonia on Saturday. Walker totaled 12 saves, a 1.000 save percentage and a 0.00 GAA in the two games. For the season, she has posted a 4-1-1 record with a 0.64 GAA, .871 save percentage and the four shutouts.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Maddie Zwickl
New Paltz, FR, Setter (Chester, N.Y)
New Paltz freshman setter Maddie Zwickl averaged 11.33 assists per set in a 3-1 week for the Hawks. Zwickl also averaged 1.42 digs per set, 0.67 kills per set, 0.42 service aces per set and 0.17 blocks per set. She dished out 29 assists and added five digs in a 3-0 loss to Williams College on Tuesday. On Friday, in a rematch of the 2013 SUNYAC Tournament final against Buffalo State, she handed out 37 assists and added six digs in a 3-0 New Paltz victory. Finally, on Saturday, Zwickl tallied 36 assists and four kills in a 3-0 triumph over The College at Brockport before collecting 34 assists, five digs and four service aces in a 3-0 win over SUNY Plattsburgh. Zwickl ranks fourth in the SUNYAC in assists per set (8.21). New Paltz (20-4, 6-0 SUNYAC) next competes at the Richard Stockton Osprey Classic from Friday-Saturday, Oct. 17-18, at Richard Stockton College.
