SUNYAC selects Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York (SUNYAC) has picked its weekly athletes honored for their performances during the week of Sept. 29 through Oct. 5. These awards were announced by the conference office in Cortland, N.Y., on Monday, Oct. 6.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK ÂÂÂÂ - Alfredo Mazzuca
Geneseo, SO (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz)
Afredo Mazzuca finished fourth out of 289 runners to lead Geneseo to first out of 21 teams at the 34th-annual Geneseo Invitational, Saturday, at Letchworth State Park. Mazzuca covered the eight-kilometer circuit in 25:09.0, which was the third-fastest time by a collegiate runner (a Geneseo alumnus won the race) in a field of 289 total runners. The field also included nationally ranked No. 12 Dickinson (Pa.), No. 30 Oneonta as well as regionally ranked Ithaca (No. 6), Elizabethtown (No. 9 in Mideast) and Hamilton (No. 10).
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Cassie GoodmanÂ
Geneseo, SR (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes)
Cassie Goodman ran to a convincing first-place finish at the 34th-Annual Geneseo Invitational, Saturday, leading the No. 7 Knights to first place out of a 19-team field that included No. 9 Dickinson, No. 15 Oneonta, No. 24 Elizabethtown and No. 32 RIT, as well as Atlantic Region-ranked squads Ithaca (No. 8) and Hamilton (No. 9). Goodman covered the six-kilometer Letchworth State Park circuit with a winning time of 21:29.4, a full 14 seconds ahead of 2013 All-American Rachel Malone from Brockport and the rest of the 284 runners in the field.
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bailee BarrettÂ
Oneonta, SO, F (Camden, NY/Camden)
Bailee Barrett scored all four goals this past Saturday to lead the Red Dragons to a 4-2 win against Brockport. She also added an assist on Friday in a 3-1 win at SUNY Geneseo to give her nine points for the weekend.
FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sarita CharapÂ
Oswego, FR, GKÂ (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City)
Charap played every minute for the Lakers this week, helping the team go 1-0. The freshman recorded her first career shutout in a game where she made nine saves against Keystone.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Hans PurtellÂ
Oneonta, SO, MF (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City)
Hans Purtell registered a goal in each of Oneonta's conference road wins this weekend against Brockport and SUNY Geneseo. In both matches he scored the opening goal for the Red Dragons, as they remain unbeaten on the season and tied for first place in the SUNYAC.
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK –Sean Streb
Cortland, JR, D (Lansing, NY/Lansing)
Sean Streb helped the Red Dragons (8-2-1, 3-0-1 SUNYAC) post a 2-0 record over the weekend as Cortland extended its unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games. In a 1-0 win vs. Plattsburgh on Friday, Streb helped anchor a defense that recorded its seventh shutout of the season and scored the game-winning goal on a header with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation. In Cortland;s 3-1 victory versus Potsdam on Saturday, Streb registered two shots from his defender position as the Red Dragons kept the Bears off the scoreboard until the 83rd minute.
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Leah GreeneÂ
Geneseo, FR, MF (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./JFK Catholic)
In Friday's match-up at New Paltz, Greene scored a hat-trick to lead the Knights to a 5-0 victory. Greene recorded the first three goals of the game, the first tally coming after she beat the Hawks' keeper one-on-one. In addition to three goals, Greene was also credited with an assist after she connected passes through the middle of the field and laid the ball off to junior forward Kelsey Raschke for the score. On Saturday, Greene scored her fourth goal of the weekend to lead Geneseo past Oneonta, 2-0, and to its second-straight shutout and third straight win. Greene leads the team in points with 16 on six goals and four assists as the Knights are now 9-2-1 (3-1 SUNYAC) on the season.

Plattsburgh, SR, GK (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville)
Danielle Schmitt helped the Cardinals go 1-0-1 this weekend against SUNY Cortland and Oswego St. Schmitt had a shutout on Friday against the Red Dragons in a 3-0 victory and made five saves in the game against the Lakers. In the shootout stanza on Saturday against Oswego Schmitt made three consecutive saves to guide the Cardinals to a 3-2 shootout victory.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jessica CrooksÂ
Buffalo State, SR, MH/RS (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield)
Jessica Crooks was named the MVP of the Fredonia Classic, leading the Bengals to a perfect 4-0 mark. In 14 sets, she posted 43 kills with an attack percentage of 27.3 and added a team-best 15 blocks.
