SUNYAC cross country teams receive USTFCCCA top-10 regional rankings
The U.S. Track and Field and Cross country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2010 preseason regional cross country rankings for NCAA Division III, and the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) was well-represented in the Atlantic Region, with five men's teams and four women's teams receiving a ranking in the top 10.
On the men's side, the Geneseo Blue Knights - the defending SUNYAC Champion - was the highest ranked SUNYAC squad at No. 2 behind top-ranked New York University. SUNY Plattsburgh received the No. 4 ranking and Fredonia State checked in at No. 6 while Oneonta was slotted eighth and Cortland rounded out the rankings at No. 10. The SUNYAC was one of three Division III conferences to have five teams appear in the regional rankings. Only two conferences had more schools with the NESCAC ranking seven teams and the WIAC featuring six.
SUNY Geneseo led the women's side as well with a No. 2 ranking following their ninth place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division III championships. Geneseo was joined in the rankings by fellow SUNYAC schools Plattsburgh, Cortland and Brockport. The Cardinals join the Knights near the top of the ranking at No. 4, Cortland checked in just outside the top five at No. 6 and the Golden Eagles will open the 2010 season as the No. 9 ranked teams in the region.
The NCAA Atlantic Regional will be held Nov. 13 at Fortin Park in Oneonta, NY with the Red Dragons serving as the meet host to more than 40 colleges from institutions in New York and New Jersey. The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships are set for Nov. 20 in Waverly, Iowa.
