Athletes of the Week Announced by SUNYAC
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Geneseo
Marissa Liberati, sophomore
Sophomore Marissa Liberati (Manchester, NY/Red Jacket) is the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week after leading the Blue Knights to a seventh place team finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State. Liberati was the first Division III runner across the line with a 25th place time of 22:07 over 6,000 meters. She finished behind runners from Georgetown, Princeton, Penn State, LaSalle, Navy and St. Joseph's.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Geneseo
Lee Berube, junior
Junior Lee Berube (Putnam Station, NY/Ticonderoga) led Geneseo to a fifth place finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State to earn SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors for the week ending September 12. Berube placed 13th in a time of 25:53 over 5.2 miles in a field of 193 runners, primarily comprised of Division I athletes. The defending SUNYAC individual champion was the first Division III runner to cross, finishing behind runners from Georgetown (4), Princeton (3), Navy (2), Penn State (2) and St. Joseph's (1).
FIELD HOCKEY -Cortland
Erin Smith, freshman forward
Freshman Erin Smith (Greene, NY/Greene) scored twice as nationally fifth-ranked Cortland defeated host RPI, 3-0, in a non-conference game, to earn SUNYAC Field Hockey Player of the Week honors for the week ending September 12. Smith scored the first two goals of the game, once in each half as the Red Dragons posted its third 3-0 shutout. She leads the team three goals on the season.
Joe Marino, senior goalkeeper
Senior goalkeeper Joe Marino (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) posted two shutouts on the week to earn the second consecutive SUNYAC Player of the Week for The College at Brockport. Marino posted his third and fourth shutouts of the year as the Golden Eagles blanked St. John Fisher 3-0 and Hobart, 1-0. He made six saves against Hobart, the No. 1 team in the weekly D3soccer.com online poll, to hand the Statesmen their first loss of the season and who previously defeated the defending national champions Messiah College in overtime. Marino hasn't allowed a goal in 390 minutes and currently has 0.39 goals against average.
Caitlin Titus, junior goalkeeper
Potsdam goalie Caitlin Titus (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) has been selected as the SUNYAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending September 12. Titus helped Potsdam to a 2-0 week when she kept Wells College off the board in the first half of the Bears 3-0 win. She then recorded her second career solo shutout in a 1-0 win over Sage College. Potsdam improves to 4-1 on the season and Titus has not allowed a goal in 225 minutes of action.
Chelsea Senn, junior middle blocker
Fredonia State earned its second consecutive SUNYAC Volleyball Player of the Week, with this week's honor going to junior Chelsea Senn (Hamburg, NY/Frontier). Senn was named to the Nazareth Golden Flyer All-Tournament team as Fredonia finished 2-2 on the week including a victory over nationally ranked #19 New York University. She started the week with a team-high nine kills in a 3-0 sweep against Alfred. At the Golden Flyer Tournament she collected 20 kills and 11 blocks, included 12 kills against NYU and seven blocks verse Hiram College. She finished the week hitting .387 with 29 kills and 15 blocks as Fredonia improves to 6-3 on the season.
