SUNYAC Names Swimmers and Divers of the Week
With the SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships less than three weeks away, student-athletes have been stepping up their performances by hitting NCAA qualifying marks on the diving boards, setting season best marks and posting school record times.
MEN’S DIVING – Geneseo
Brandon Peifer (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury), sophomore
Brandon Peifer won both boards for Geneseo in the 121-81 win over Monroe Community College on Monday. He narrowly missed NCAA provisional qualifying status with 284.25 in the 3-meter event and his winning 1-meter score was 263.30. On Saturday he won the three meter diving with another close NCAA provisional score of 282.00 and finished second on the one-meter board with a score of 255.30 in a tri-meet with Westminster and Carnegie Mellon. (The NCAA mark on the 3-meter board is 285).
WOMEN’S DIVING – Fredonia
Sarah Ficarro (Owego, NY/Owego), junior
Sarah Ficarro competed at Trinity University in Texas over the weekend posted two national provisional qualifying scores. Ficarro won the women's 1-meter springboard event with an 11-dive score of 463.55 and finished second in the 3-meter with 463.75 points.
MEN’S SWIMMING – Oswego
Jordan Prophet (Brockville, Ontario/St. Mary Catholic), freshman
Oswego State freshman Jordan Prophet set his fourth school record of the season as he posted a time of 53.59 in the 100 backstroke to win the event in a dual meet against Buffalo State. The previous record was 54.02 set by Scott Williams in 2001. Later in the meet, Prophet won the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.41 seconds and swam the first leg of the first-place 200 medley relay, which posted a time of 1:39.30. Prophet touched first by more than 20 seconds in the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.02, but was entered as an exhibition swimmer.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING – Buffalo State
Kaitlin Mergler (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), junior
Buffalo State junior Kaitlin Mergler won three individual events for the Bengals in the dual meet against Oswego. Mergler provided first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.99), 100 free (54.74) and the 500 free (5:25.39). All of her times are the best of the season, improving her seed time for the upcoming conference championships.
