The 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships has officially ended it first full day of competition. Thursday was filled with fast swimming, as an NCAA “B” cut was obtained in every swimming final on the women’s side and the diving boards featured four men and four women posting national qualifying scores. Yesterday’s slate of events featured the preliminary diving rounds for the men’s 1-meter and the women’s 3-meter diving.
The Fredonia Blue Devils lead the team standings on the women’s side following Thursday night’s finals with a score of 235, including 93 points earned in diving on women’s 3-meter board. Geneseo is not far behind at 214 followed by Cortland (193.5) and New Paltz (147.5).

The Cortland 200 yard freestyle relay team of Jessica Evans, Michelle Seeger, MK Dugue and Sarah Culmo got things off to a quick start in NCAA Bcut fashion as they tied the SUNYAC meet and conference record of 1:35.79. Culmo was also an individual winner for the Red Dragons as she captured the 50 freestyle. She finished in a Bcut time of 23.84, out-touching the defending champion Christine Rieth of New Paltz (23.96).
New Paltz junior Yuka Suzuka slipped under the NCAA provisional time (2:08.67) in the 200 individual medley, clocking a 2:08.62 to win the event by more than two seconds. Suzuka added to her impressive evening by clocking a solid NCAA provisional cut time in the 100 backstroke leading off the Hawks’ second-place 400 medley relay, which went a 3:56.30. She swam the opening 100 in 56.49, which is just .20 seconds off the NCAA automatic cut. The winning 400 medley relay time of 3:54.63 belonged to the Geneseo quartet of Haleigh Wixson, Kaitlin Wilcoxen, Lily Powell and Abby Max. In addition to the relay provisional cut time, Wixson’s split in the 100 back of 57.74 was also a Bcut.
A Geneseo swimmer won the 500 freestyle for the sixth straight year, this time with the title going to Abby Max. She clocked an NCAA provisional time of 5:01.70, which was .13 seconds off her time in the prelims.
Fredonia junior Sarah Ficarro became a three-time individual SUNYAC champion on the 3-meter board with a national qualifying score of 471.30. Ficarro led a quintet of Blue Devils to the top of the podium as Fredonia finished 1-5 in the event and also took eighth place. Ashley Keller (451.90) and Leanne Kies (422.55) took second and third, respectively.

On the men’s side, Geneseo won two events on the evening as they currently stand in first place on the leader board with 214 points. Cortland also won two events and is a narrow four points behind with 210. Fredonia (134) and Oneonta (115) each won one event Thursday night to complete the top four teams.
The Blue Wave was led by freshman John Nasky who edged out teammate and three-time defending champion Nate Foley in the 500 freestyle. Nasky posted a 4:42.07 in the event while Foley clocked a 4:43.77. Geneseo took ownership back in the 200 freestyle relay, snapping Cortland’s three year win streak. The Blue Wave combination of Frank Schiappa, Aaron Wagner, Drew Rogers and Dan Strothenke were .33 seconds off a new meet record time as they finished in 1:23.60.
Juniors Ben Strickland and Dan Maximowicz were winners for the Cortland Red Dragons. Strickland won the 200IM in a time of 1:55.23 to finish ahead of Oswego freshman Jordan Prophet (1:55.68) and three-time champion from Geneseo, Ken Pink (1:56.43). Less than one second separated the top eight finishers in the 50 freestyle, but it was Maximowicz who touched first in 21.21, just .04 seconds ahead of the defending champion Frank Schiappa of Geneseo (21.25). Fredonia sophomore John Estanislau was third in 21.38.
Fredonia junior Ryan Fuller took control of the final three dives on the 1-meter board including his final dive which received scores of 9.0 and 9.5 to earn the top score of 488.75. Brockport senior Chris Austin posted a 470.40 and Cortland senior Travis Burke finished with a score of 467.50.
Oneonta State capped off the night with an exciting first place finish in the 400 medley relay. The Red Dragon four-some of Colton Roe, Alex Vaughn, Ryan Walsh and Alex Miller clocked a 3:28.49, which was .08 seconds faster than second place Cortland (3:28.57). Roe’s lead off in the 100 back of 51.56, fell under the provisional qualifying time of 51.83. Based on records dating back to 1986, this is the only relay win for Oneonta at the SUNYAC meet.
Tomorrow schedule of events will consist of the 200 medley relay, the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 freestyle relay as well as the prelims for the men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter boards. The morning session will start at 10 a.m., while the finals will be held in the evening beginning at 6pm.
