Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week
Brockport’s Melanie Melewski, Cortland’s Travis Burke, Geneseo’s Frank Schiappa and Fredonia’s Sarah Ficarro were named the SUNYAC Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week for the 2011-12 season’s first week of competition.
Freshman Melanie Melewski (New Baltimore, NY/R-C-S) set two schools records as The College at Brockport opened the 2011-12 season with a dual meet against Fredonia Saturday. Melewski broke the school record in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:35.00 and was part of the 200-yard medley relay that set the new school standard with a winning time of 1:56.71. Melewski also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.30.
Senior Travis Burke (Massapequa, NY) posted a first and second place finish last week at the season opening three-team NYU Invitational Men's Swimming and Diving Fall Invitational. Burke posted a score of 300.30 points to win the three-meter diving, finishing 40 points ahead of the runner up. On the one-meter board he scored 274.88 points for a second-place showing.
Junior Frank Schiappa (East Amherst, NY) started the 2011-12 season in record fashion to earn the SUNYAC men’s swimmer of the week. Schiappa won the 50 freestyle in a pool record time of 21.22. He was also part of the winning 200 free relay (1:27.07) and led off with a split of 21.45 in a dual meet against Division I Canisius.
Junior Sarah Ficarro (Owego, NY) picked up right where she left off last spring as she went three for three over the weekend in her events to earn SUNYAC women’s diver of the week. On Friday against Niagara, she won the 1-meter with 233.65 points and the 3-meter with 240.80 points. On Saturday against Brockport, she won the 1-meter with 241.60 points.
