Geneseo Women Win 2012 Swimming and Diving Championship
The Geneseo Women's swimming and diving team won their fifth consecutive State University of New York (SUNYAC) Championship Saturday night at the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY. Geneseo totaled 721.5 points during the three-day meet to runner-up Fredonia’s 657.50.
Junior Kaitlin Wilcoxen was the top finisher for the Knights as she defended her title in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.08). Wilcoxen beat her competition by three seconds as Stephanie Andrasek of Fredonia took second (2:28.09) and Katherine Jesaitis of Geneseo touched third (2:30.07).

New Paltz won three individual events as junior Yuka Suzuka picked up her third win of the meet with an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 backstroke (2:01.60), becoming a three-time champion in the event. Her time set a new meet and conference record. Geneseo’s Abby Max hit a “B” cut time of 2:04.95 to finish second.
Sophomore Chelsea Allocco kicked off the session in grand fashion for the Hawks, clocking an NCAA “B” cut time (17:26.44) in the 1,650 freestyle to defend her conference title.
The 200 butterfly featured the same 1-2-3 finish as last year. Junior Carly Marshall lowered the conference meet record in the 200 butterfly, as she used a strong front half to post an event-winning time of 2:08.30 to defend her conference title. Cortland’s Chrisanna Hickey was second in a “B” cut time of 2:08.48 and Geneseo’s Lily Powell took third (2:09.27).
Cortland’s Sarah Culmo won her second individual event of the meet with a “B” cut time of 52.10 in the 100 freestyle. Culmo placed ahead of Christine Rieth (52.42) of New Paltz and Kaitlin Mergler (52.83) of Buffalo State.
Fredonia sophomore Ashley Keller earned the first SUNYAC title of her career with a win on the 1-meter board. Keller posted a new meet and conference record score of 478.15 to lead a quartet of Blue Devil divers to the top of the podium. Sarah Ficarro (474.85), Katelyn Hayley (450.45) and Heather Colby (412.20) finished 2-3-4, respectively and Leanne Kies provided a sixth place finish as Fredonia earned 90 points in the event.
Geneseo won their third relay event of the championship meet as Haleigh Wixson, Lauren Boyce, Elyssa Max and Abby Max combined to post a come-from behind win in the 400-freestyle realy in an NCAA “B” cut time of 3:31.77. Cortland was second in a “B” cut time of 3:32.25 and New Paltz took third in 3:33.40.
