Geneseo Men Win 2012 Swimming and Diving Championship
The Geneseo men's swimming and diving team successfully defended their team title at the annual State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship, hosted at the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY, February 9-11. It is the 14th consecutive title for the Blue Wave who finished with 731 points to second place Cortland’s 690.
Freshman John Nasky started the night off for the Blue Wave when he posted an NCAA “B” cut winning time of 16:10.69 to lead a Geneseo 1-2-3 finish. Three time defending champion, senior Nate Foley finished second in 16:23.77 and Jeff Singer took third place honors (16:24.80).

Senior Frank Schiappa picked up a win the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.28, followed by Fredonia’s John Estanislau (47.16) and teammate Drew Rogers (47.38).
Potsdam junior Alexander Taylor won his second individual event of the meet with a time of 2:06.61 in the 200 breaststroke. Taylor’s time slipped under the NCAA “B” cut and set a new meet record.
Cortland’s Justin Nelson set a new meet and conference record with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:53.15 in the 200 backstroke. Nelson finished second in 2011 and could have repeated that performance but he out-touched Oswego’s Jordan Prophet (1:53.16) by .01 second for the narrow victory.
Oneonta sophomore Ryan Walsh defended his title in the 200 butterfly for his second individual win of the meet. Walsh clocked a 1:55.39 to finish ahead of Geneseo freshman Bryan Schaub (1:57.68) and Cortland’s Erik Scheemaker (1:57.87).
Junior Ryan Fuller posted his second win of the meet as he captured the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 512.65 points. Cortland’s Travis Burke finished second with a total of 494.35 points and Brockport’s Chris Austin took third place (472.55).
The 400 freestyle relay was full of high energy as always as the Blue Wave quartet of Schiappa, Rogers, Aaron Wagner and Dan Strothenke posted the winning time of 3:08.06. It was the eighth win in the last nine years for Geneseo in the event. Cortland took second in 3:09.63 and Fredonia finished third (3:10.31).
