Plattsburgh State Alum, Olympian, John Daly Subject of NCAA's 40-in-40 Story
INDIANAPOLIS – Former Plattsburgh State track and field standout and current U.S. Olympian John Daly has been chosen as the subject of a feature story on NCAA.org as part of its "40-in-40" initiative which celebrates the 40th anniversary of Division III athletics.
Daly, who hails from Smithtown, N.Y., put together a stellar track and field career during his years as a Cardinal. At the 2007 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Plattsburgh State alumnus cemented his name in the school's record books by amassing a school-record 6,786 points in the decathlon on his way to earning a fifth-place finish as well as All-American status.
Not only did his final point total turn out to be a school record, but his leap of 7.02 meters in the long jump portion of the event also stands as the best in Plattsburgh State history.
During his collegiate career, Daly could frequently be found at Lake Placid's U.S. training facility for sled sports. While there, he honed his skills in the skeleton event and was selected to represent the United States for the first time at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Currently, Daly is one of 230 athletes from the United States who are in Sochi, Russia to take part in the 2014 Olympics.
During a yearlong celebration of Division III's 40th anniversary, NCAA.org is publishing 40 weekly profiles of student-athletes who attended member institutions during the past 40 years. Titled "40-in-40," the project seeks to bring to life the philosophy and ideals of Division III by featuring individuals who have exemplified the division's attributes of proportion, comprehensive learning, passion, responsibility, sportsmanship and citizenship – not just during their time on campus, but also in their careers or avocations.
