SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Run Saturday
The College at Brockport will once again be hosting the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships. The championships will be held March 1st and will feature eight men's and eight women's SUNYAC schools all fighting for the right to be the 2014 champions. The event will be held in the Special Events Recreation Center (SERC) which is located on the Brockport campus.
Last year the men's Oneonta Red Dragons won their first team championship in school history. Oneonta finished first in seven different events last year, and have many returning athletes back including the SUNYAC Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete Joe Fox. They defeated the Cortland Red Dragons in a fight right to the end 153 to 146.50. It was a close battle in 2013 and is sure to be another epic finish this year with Cortland men ranked 10th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Team Rankings.
For the 16th time overall the Cortland Red Dragon women's team brought home the 2013 championship as they scored a remarkable 172 points. Cortland had finished first in five different events, and second in another four to repeat as SUNYAC Champions. They beat seven different SUNYAC schools, Geneseo being the closest competitor with 116.5 points. This year Cortland has many returning female athletes back from last year. In 2013, Geneseo, Brockport, and Buffalo State all had first place finishes in three events.
So what will the 2014 SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships hold for the athletes? Will the Cortland Red Dragons women's team win three years in a row? Or will we see a new champion emerge? With so many different teams close in the men's division who will finish the season as SUNYAC Champions? We will find out Saturday, March 1st at the SUNYAC Championships in Brockport. The field events will begin at 9:00 a.m. while the track events will start at 11:00 a.m.

Women's Events:
60-meter dash: With Sasha Henry now graduated we will have a new champion of the 60 meter dash. Sarah Bonnell (Cortland) who has finished second in the event the last two years hopes to earn her first victory. Bonnell has the best time this year at 7.88, but her freshman teammate Amanda Moore is right behind her with a time of 7.91. Anna Dambacher (Fredonia) and Niasha Houpe (Buffalo State) will hope to get a top three finish as well.
200-meter dash: Anna Dambacher from Fredonia is ranked number one this year with a time of 25.83. That won't stop Cortland Red Dragon Sarah Bonnell from trying to win this event as her time is 26.71. Kaitlyn Brandt is also hoping that she will finish in the top three in this event. This event has many competitors so it should come right down to the end.
400-meter dash: Africa Harper (Cortland) who won this event last year is not even in the top ten best times this year so it looks like we could have a new champion. Sasa Vann (Buffalo State) has the best time this year at 57.58; she is followed by her teammate Jazlyn Porter as she has a time of 58.93. Brittany Cocchieri (Oneonta) who is third in the rankings looks to finish in the top three.
800-meter run: After finishing third in this event last year Keira Wood (Geneseo) is ranked number one in this event this year. Her time of 2:15.64 is only about a second better than Katie Bott (Oswego) who is number two. Fredonia State senior Kim Foltz looks to win her first 800 meter run this year as well and should be able to finish in the top three.
Mile run: This event looks like it will be between two female athletes as Keira Wood (Geneseo) and Kayla Blomback (Cortland) look to be the heavy favorites to win. Wood has the best time this year at 5:07.29 with Blomback not too far behind her with a time of 5:09.44. It will be interesting to see who ends up winning this one.
3,000-meter run: Oneonta Red Dragon senior Danielle Kennedy who won this event last year will hope to make it back-to-back this year as she once again has a top time at 10:18.11. Kennedy is not considered the favorite though as Rachel Malone (Brockport) has the best time at 10:14.81. Kelly Dricoll (Plattsburgh) and Mary Kate Bida (Oneonta) hope to earn a top three finish.
5,000-meter run: This event is between first place finisher Rachel Malone (Brockport), Danielle Kennedy (Oneonta), and third place finisher Kelly Driscoll (Plattsburgh) from last year. Malone is once again the favorite to win as she has the best time this year at 17:35.66; Kennedy has the second best time at 17:40.67. Driscoll has the third best time at 17:46.93 respectively. Malone should be able to win two years in a row.
60-meter hurdles: With the top three finishers all gone due to graduation we will have a new champion for the 60 meter hurdle. It should come down to four female athletes, Lisa Brodratti (Cortland) has the top time this year and will look to have the best time again come the SUNYAC championships. Brodratti's time is 9.16 followed by Treasure Glymph at 9.22. Angelique Jean-Charles (Cortland) and Allison Hoh (Geneseo) will also be looking to take the gold in this event.
4x400-meter relay: It was the Cortland Red Dragons and the Oswego State Lakers who finished first and second last year in the event but this year it's Buffalo State who has the best time this year at 3:58.60. SUNY Cortland is in second while SUNY Oswego is just a second behind Cortland this year.
Distance medley relay: Last year Geneseo took home the gold in this event, but with so many teams switching up their lineups from last year it looks like we will have a new winner for the distance medley relay.  Brockport has the best time this year at 12:37.57 followed closely by SUNY Oswego (12:39.17) and Buffalo State (12:39.34). This one should be a fun event to watch.
High Jump: In what was considered a shocker, senior Kacy Boburka (Oneonta) won the high jump, upsetting Taylor Hudson (Cortland) by the smallest margin. With Boburka now gone Hudson hopes to get back on her dominant path and win the high jump as she did her freshman year. She has the top jump this year at 1.70 meters. Oneonta freshman Hannah Baker has the second best with a jump of 1.60 meters. Hudson's teammate Lexi Budd (Cortland) and Treasure Glymph (Buffalo State) look to be in the mix for the top three as well.
Pole vault: Cortland's Kelly Hugo took this event last year and will be hoping to make it a repeat this year as she is ranked number one for best jump at 3.60 meters. Marcy Merritt's (Brockport) jump was at 3.50 meters.  Hugo set a SUNYAC record during the season last year with a jump of 3.60 meters. It will be a fun event to watch to see if the veteran of this event can hold off the new up and comer.
Long jump: Sarah Bonnell of Cortland won the long jump last year making that back-to-back for this great athlete. Bonnell will hope to close out her career with another win in this event making that three in a row for her, but she will have some stiff competition.  Buffalo State freshman Niasha Houpe has a top jump this year at 5.40 meters just a little better than Bonnell (5.37 meters). It is Taylor Hudson, Bonnell's teammate (Cortland) though who has the best jump this year at 5.43 meters.
Triple jump: With last year's winner gone someone new should be able to come in and take the triple jump.  It looks like it's between two athletes for the event as Treasure Glymph (Buffalo State) and Alex Kober (Oneonta) have the best jumps this year at 11.15m and 11.12m respectively. Last year's runner up Hailey Smith closes out the top three in best jumps with a jump of 10.83m.
Shot put: With Nichole Jones now gone we will have a new winner of the shot put event. It looks like it's a group of juniors who are all hoping to take the event. Valerie Vancol (Cortland) has the best throw this year at 12.59m which is better than Brockport's Ann Milliken's throw which is 11.78m. Nichole Desens (Fredonia) and Ashley Gadway (Plattsburgh) hope to finish in the top three also.
Weight throw: This year the weight throw looks to come down to last year's third and fourth place finishers Ann Milliken (Brockport) and Ashley Gadway (Plattsburgh). Milliken's throw of 15.51 is the best this year followed by Gadway's throw of 14.72. This event should be a good one to watch.
Men's Events
60-meter dash: Last year it was a one two finish for two Oneonta stars Sean Bernstein, and Joseph Carr. This year though it is two Cortland athletes leading the group as Melique Garcia has the top time at 6.82. His teammate Jerel Williams is third with a time of 7.06. Cory Cox (Buffalo State) is right ahead of Williams with a time of 7.05, and another Cortland athlete Romain Saint Germain is trying to finish in the top three as well this year.
200-meter dash: With Sean Bernstein (Oneonta) now gone a lot of positions will open up for new winners of events including this one. Joseph Carr of Oneonta has the top time in this event this season with a time of 22.22 just a little bit better than teammate Jake Alviene (22.42) that finished second in this event last year. Other athletes who will be competing for the gold in this event include two Cortland Red Dragon Melique Garcia and Buffalo States Cory Cox.
400-meter dash: This event looks to be a two man race as both Matthew Wagenhauser (Oswego State) and Micah Patterson (Oneonta) look to win this event. With a fastest time this year with a time of 49.53 Wagenhauser looks to have the edge over Patterson who has a time of 50.17.
800-meter run: With both athletes who finished one and two last year gone it's a brand new ball game for someone else to emerge.  So far that individual is Felipe Yanez (Buffalo State) with a time of 1:54.18. He is not the only athlete who is trying to win this event as two of Yanez's teammates: Alex Ngabo and Bumkuth Jiak are top tier in the rankings.Â
Mile run: Collin Mulcahy (Fredonia) is ranked number one this year in the mile with a time of 4:16.50 and looks to be the favorite heading into the event. Mulcahy has almost a two second lead over both Tom Haskins (Oneonta) and Bumkuth Jiak (Buffalo State).
3,000-meter run: Charles Remillard (Oneonta) who won the event last year is not even in the top five in time this year as there is a lot of up and coming track stars who are fighting to be number one. Tom Clark (Geneseo) looks to be the favorite in this event as he has the top time at 8:29.01 Remillard's fellow teammate Mike Didas has a top time heading into SUNYAC ‘S with a time of 8:40.99. Cohen Miles-Rath (Geneseo) and Tom Hopkins (Cortland) finish the top four in the rankings this year, and each athlete hopes to be number one come March.

60-meter hurdles: Jake Alviene (Oneonta) hopes to continue his streak of winning this event as he once again has the top time heading into the event with a time of 8.25. Alviene who is hoping to become a back-to-back champion has to hold off both Eric Williams (Fredonia) and Nick Avossa (Cortland) in order to do so.
4x400-meter relay: The Oneonta Red Dragons won this event last year, and hope to make it back-to-back this year as they have the top time. They have Buffalo State by a second this year though and the Oswego State Lakers also look to have their teams finish in the top three.
Distance medley relay: After the Geneseo Knights finished second in this event last year they now look forward to this year where them and Oneonta are the heavy favorites to possibly win as they posted times of 10:13.00 (Geneseo) and 10:11.57 (Oneonta) which is eight seconds better than Buffalo State at 10:21.88. Cortland who won this event last year finishes out the top three and will hope to pull an upset this year and win the event back-to-back years.
High jump: This event looks to be a three man race and it could come down to just a tenth of a meter.  Surprisingly it's going to come down to three teammates from Geneseo. Aiden Fullerton has the best jump at 1.94 meters while his two teammates Phil Longo and Luke Taverne are at 1.93 meters.Â
Pole vault: Connor Ten Eyck who finished second last year now looks to be one of the favorites for the pole vault as his vault of 4.70 meters has him number two in the ranks this year. It is Cameron Shaughnessy who is number one though with a jump of 4.72 meters. This one will be entertaining to watch to see who will come away with the gold.
Long jump: This event looks like it's going to come down to two schools as either an athlete from Cortland or Buffalo State hope to win the long jump. Cortland athlete Glen Forsythe has the best jump at 7.19m followed by Buffalo State athlete Cory Cox whose jump was 7.15. Cortland Red dragons Andre Green and Jonathyn Granger hope to be in the top three as well as they both have jumps of 7.07m and 6.95m respectively.
Triple jump: Junior Glenn Forsythe of Cortland hopes to win his first triple jump this year as he has the best jump this year at 14.65m. He will have some competition though as Ray Richardson (Buffalo State) who came in second last year hopes to win it this year.
Shot put: Joe Fox of Oneonta who won Most Outstanding Field Athlete last year also won this event as well. This year though Fox is outside the top three and it will be hard for him to repeat as he will have a lot of competition. Brandon Ganschow (Brockport) has a top throw this year at 16.26 meters. It is J.D. Roth (Oneonta) though who has the best throw by far this year at 17.02m. Antoine Keels (Brockport) will be looking to take the event as well, so this event will be a fun one to watch.
Weight throw:  This event looks like it's going to come down to two athletes that are both on the same team. Pat Weinert (Oneonta) who won this event last year will hope to make it a repeat, but his teammate J.D. Roth who finished second last year will hope to finally finish first this year. Roth has the best throw this year at 18.39 meters, but Weinert is close enough where he can make it interesting as his best this year is 18.33.Â
