SUNYAC Athletes of the Week selected for the week of Jan. 18-25
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Athletes of the Week have been selected. Thirteen athletes from nine institutions have been honored for their performances this week.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Dan Costa (SR) Â
Potsdam (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport)
Costa won three solo events for the Bears on Friday night against Clarkson University. He compiled wins in the 100 backstroke (56.11), 50 free (22.68) and the 200 backstroke (2:02.73) and also teamed up to take the win in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:43.93. Saturday against St. Michael's, Costa added another three solo wins to his total in the 50 backstroke (25.99), 100 backstroke (55.87) and the 50 free with a time of 22.99 to lead the Bears to a win over the Purple Knights. He also, combined with teammates to take the victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.81.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK – Sam Randall (FR)
Geneseo (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland)
Randall was unbeaten in the day's diving events during Geneseo's 163-125 victory at Oswego on Saturday. He was victorious on 3-meter (307.30) while also taking top-honors on 1-meter (315.75).
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Molly McCulloch (FR) Â
New Paltz (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patent)
New Paltz freshman Molly McCulloch won a total of six individual events and participated on two winning relays in a 2-0 week for the Hawks. On Friday against Mount Saint Mary College, she won the 50 freestyle (25.76) and the 100 freestyle (56.62) en route to the team's 115-87 win over the Knights. She then played a pivotal role in the Hawks' 142-120 victory over SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, winning the 100 backstroke (1:03.52) and the 100 butterfly (58.33) and participating on New Paltz's first-place 200 medley relay (1:53.83) and first-place 200 freestyle relay (1:42.67). McCulloch's time in the 100 butterfly, which is the fastest in the SUNYAC this season, broke the event's Elting Pool record by more than a second. On the season, McCulloch also ranks fourth in the SUNYAC in the 50 freestyle (24.85) and sixth in the conference in the 100 backstroke (1:01.19). New Paltz (6-0) will put its perfect dual-meet record on the line in its final tune-up before the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. when it travels to SUNY Geneseo.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Meghan Bartlett (SO) Â
Fredonia (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown)
Won four boards over the course of three days, with NCAA zone qualifying scores every time. Had winning scores Friday of 263.30 in the 1-meter and 254.65 in the 3-meter in the Blue Devils' in the first-ever Fredonia women's win over Nazareth. Followed that up with winning 11-dive scores of 502.20 points in the 1-meter and 486.30 points in the 3-meter Sunday at Ithaca College's Dick Comanzo Invitational.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shawn Hulshof (SO) Â
Oswego (Stouffville Ont./Trenton Golden Hawks)
Hulshof had a six points in a 2-0 weekend for the Lakers. The sophomore helped in a 6-0 shutout of Buffalo State on Friday, recording both a goal and an assist. Against Fredonia on Saturday, Hulshof scored twice and assisted on two more in a 7-1 victory over the Blue Devils. The Stouffville, Ontario native ended the weekend with a plus six +/-.

ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Aaron Green (SR) Â
Brockport (Mt. Albert, ONT)
Aaron Green recorded his seventh straight victory Friday night in a SUNYAC contest against Morrisville. In the weekend series against the Mustangs he had multiple games of 25 or more saves. He recorded 27 saves in a 7-3 Brockport win and also recorded 26 saves while only allowing two goals in a 3-1 loss Saturday evening. He continues to lead the conference in goals against average and also in save percentage.

ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Dan Broderick (FR) Â
Cortland, Forward (White Plains, NY/New York PAL Islanders)
Broderick recorded four points on four goals for Cortland in SUNYAC play over the weekend. In a 3-3 OT tie versus Fredonia on Friday, Broderick pulled Cortland to within 3-2 and netted the game-tying goal with just 12 seconds left in regulation. In a 7-3 setback versus Buffalo St. on Saturday, Broderick scored two of Cortland's three goals. For the season, he has 27 points on 14 goals and 13 assists.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Chris Cartwright (SR) Â
Buffalo State, G (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton)
The senior guard averaged 21.0 points and 5.0 assists in three more SUNYAC victories this past week. Cartwright poured in 24 points and added four assists in a 78-61 victory at Fredonia on Tuesday. He added 19 points in a 71-59 win over Oneonta on Friday, and had 20 points and seven assists in a 95-89 win over New Paltz on Saturday. The Bengals are 9-2 since Cartwright joined the team after starting 1-4 in the first semester.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shannon McGinnis (SR) Â
Geneseo, Forward (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda)
Last Tuesday, McGinnis had 12 points and seven rebounds in the Knights' come-from-behind victory at Cortland, 68-64. In a 78-60 win over Plattsburgh on Friday, McGinnis totaled 13 points and 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season while also moving into second-place on Geneseo's all-time rebounding list. She now stands just 26 rebounds shy of the top spot. On Saturday, the Knights defeated Potsdam, 69-56, as McGinnis scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Melique Garcia (SR) Â
Cortland (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet)
Garcia finished second of 55 in the 200-meter dash (22.17) and third of 38 in the 60-meter dash (6.86) at the predominantly Div. I Cornell Upstate Challenge. His 200-meter dash time is currently the best nationally in Div. III and his 60-meter dash time is currently ranked second nationally.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Connor Christopherson (SO) Â
Cortland (Morrisonville, N.Y./Saranac)
Christopherson broke his own school record in the heptathlon with a score of 4,675 points at the Cornell Upstate Challenge. He bested his previous mark by more than 300 points and currently ranks sixth nationally in Div. III.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jess Huber (JR)
Plattsburgh (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown HS)
Jess Huber broke her own school record for the 60-meter dash for the second consecutive week, this time registering a time of 7.83 seconds in the event. Huber placed second in that particular event at the Brockport Golden Eagle Multi and Invitational and the time is currently the eighth-fastest when stacked up against all NCAA Division III student athletes.Â
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Taylor Hudson (SR) Â
Cortland (Victor, N.Y./Victor)
Hudson finished second of 33 in the long jump with an ECAC height of 5.57 meters (18' 3.25") at the predominantly Div. I Cornell Upstate Challenge. Her distance currently ranks third nationally in Div. III. Hudson also finished seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters (5' 3"), which is also an ECAC qualifier.
