SUNYAC announces conference weekly awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honors 13 athletes this week for their performances during the week of January 26 - February 1, 2015.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Jeff Doser (FR)
Geneseo (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield)
Doser won two individual events and swam on two winning relays to lead the Knights to a 152-101 victory over SUNYAC-rival New Paltz on Saturday. Doser won the 200 freestyle (1:44.84) and the 100 freestyle (47.95) while joining junior Kristian Tialios senior Kenny Athans and junior Andy Schunk to win the 400 medley relay (3:35.82), and junior Jordan Gay, first-year Derek Secord and junior Tyler Roth to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.03).
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK – Anthony Burgois (SO) Â
Geneseo (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa)
Burgois finished first on 1-meter (521.05) and third on 3-meter (476.45) in a non-scoring, 11-dive dual meet with Rochester on Saturday.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Abigail Max (SR) Â
Geneseo (New Hartford, N.Y.)
Max was victorious in two individual events and swam on two winning relays to lead the Knights over SUNYAC-rival New Paltz, 158-96, Saturday. She won the 200 freestyle (1:56.02) and the 500 freestyle (5:12.85) while joining sophomore Louisa Seelbach, sophomore Emily Jaworski and sophomore Jenna Gibbons to win the 400 medley relay (4:01.71) and junior Julie Holloway, junior Kala Wilkins and senior Stephanie Wilcoxen to log the day's fastest 200 freestyle relay (1:39.27).
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Kara Garbarino (SR) Â
Oneonta (Latham, NY/Shaker)
Garbarino helped lead Oneonta to its first dual meet win versus Cortland in the Coach Schuler era, which spans 17 years. She set school records in the 1 meter, six dives scoring 255.40 and 1-meter, 11 dives with a score of 444.60. She then set the 3 meter, six dives record later in the meet scoring 292.65. Garbarino's scores were good enough to reach NCAA marks and she only needs to reach qualifying scores in each event one more time to earn a spot in the NCAA Region 3 Diving qualifier for an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III championships in late March.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – MJ Maerkl (JR)
Morrisville, Forward (Binghamton, N.Y.)
Maerkl assisted Morrisville State to a 2-0 weekend as they picked up crucial conference wins over Fredonia with his four points. In each game, Maerkl had 2 assists, one on the game tying score on Friday, and another on the game winning tally Saturday.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Jon Hall (JR) Â
Potsdam, Goalie (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit)
Hall had another standout weekend between the pipes for Potsdam. He started it with one the best performances by a Bears goalie ever, stopping all 53 shots he faced in Potsdam's 1-0 victory over Geneseo. It was his first career shutout and the Bears' first in just over four years. The following night, Hall made 42 saves as Potsdam rallied in the final minute for a 3-3 tie with Brockport. In total, the junior finished with 95 saves on 98 shots for a .969 save percentage and 1.44 goals-against-average in the two games.

ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Dylan Vander Esch (FR)
Potsdam, Forward (San Jose/Hartford Wolfpack)
Vander Esch had two goals and an assist in Potsdam's 1-0-1 weekend against Geneseo and Brockport. The freshman forward scored the only goal in Potsdam's 1-0 victory over the Ice Knights on Friday. He also scored the game-tying goal with 42 seconds left in regulation in the Bears 3-3 tie with the Golden Eagles on Saturday. He also recorded an assist in the game.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jordan Moody (SR) Â
Plattsburgh, G (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown HS)
In his second and third starts of the season, Plattsburgh State senior Jordan Moody didn't disappoint as he led the Cardinals to a pair of critical victories which allowed them to keep pace with league-leading Oswego State. The final-year man out of Yorktown, N.Y., averaged 16.5 points per game while shooting 11-for-19 (57.9-percent) from the field which included a 4-for-7 (57.1-percent) showing from long range. Moody was one of four players who finished with 11 or more points in a win over Buffalo State on Friday night as he finished with 13. He led the charge in the Cardinals' domination of Fredonia State the following afternoon, pumping in a game-best 18 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Over the two-game stretch, Moody also averaged four rebounds, two assists and 2.5 steals per outing.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sabrina Macaulay (JR) Â
Fredonia, F (Newark, N.Y./Newark)
Macaulay had back-to-back double-doubles as the Blue Devils won both SUNYAC road games over the weekend, at Potsdam and at Plattsburgh. She had 16 points and 13 rebounds against Potsdam, and 10 points and 10 rebounds against Plattsburgh, while shooting 11 of 20 from the field in the two games. Macaulay has seven double-doubles this season and is averaging 11.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Aidan Fullerton (JR) Â
Geneseo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown)
Fullerton won the heptathlon with a school-record mark of 4649 points at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational, Saturday. In route to the heptathlon victory, Fullerton moved into second in the high jump in the SUNYAC with a 1.94m jump (6'4.25") and improved his second place mark in the long jump to 6.78m (22'3"). Fullerton's heptathlon score puts him 12th in Division III.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Antoine Keels (SR) Â
Brockport (Rochester, NY)
Antoine Keels won two events for The College at Brockport during the Hamilton Invitational. He was the top thrower in the weight throw and shot put. His weight throw distance was 15.60-meters and his shot put distance was 15.48-meters.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Keira Wood (SR) Â
Geneseo (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North)
Senior Keira Wood placed second in the mile at the 17th-Annual Bucknell Bison Open and Multi to lead the Knights, Saturday. Wood ran the mile in a time of 5:05.23 to move her into eighth in Division III while also coming in fourth in the 500-meter run (1:20.74).

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kenya Outram (JR) Â
Cortland (Brooklyn, N.Y./Victory Collegiate)
Outram finished first out of 50 competitors in the long jump at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. Her distance of 5.32 meters (17' 5.5") is an ECAC qualifier. Outram also won the 60-meter hurdles (ECAC-qualifying 9.35 seconds) and ran a leg on the winning 4x200-meter relay team (ECAC-qualifying 1:45.97).
