CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is honored to recognize this seasons Outstanding Female Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, Female Field Outdoor Athlete of the Year, and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year awards as voted on by the conference coaches.
The Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year award goes to Oneonta's Rachel Shine (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). The Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award goes to Plattsburgh's Amanda Gadway (Malone, N.Y. / Franklin Academy), and the Coach of the Year award honors went to Geneseo's head coach, Chris Popovici.
Rachel Shine who holds the conference record in the 800 and 1500 meter runs beat the championship meet record and her own conference record that was set by her a month before. Both of her times were ECAC qualifiers and she is set her sights on going to the NCAAs. She is also currently ranked 4th in the country for the 800 and 1st for the 1500.
During the SUNYAC Championship Amanda threw a record-toss of 49.40 meters in the hammer throw which led to her becoming the champion in the event for the second straight year. That mark, which currently ranks as ninth-best in the ECAC, surpassed her own school record of 48.67 meter set at last week's Capital District Classic. Amanda also came in first place for the shot put with a distance of 12.65 meters which was a personal best and she accomplished third place finishes in the Javelin and Discuss.
Geneseo's Head coach Chris Popovici led the Women's Outdoor Track and Field team to a first place finish at the SUNYAC Championship with 154.5 points. This is Coach Popovici's first year as coach of the Geneseo Knights and the last time Geneseo's women's outdoor track and field team won a SUNYAC championship was in 2010.
