SUNYAC announces last weekly honors in March
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selects its final athletes of the week for March. Twelve athletes from the six spring sports have been honored.
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK –Vinny Bomasuto (SR)
Cortland, Outfield (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk)
Bomasuto went 3-for-4 with a triple, five RBI and three runs scored in Cortland's lone game, a 15-11 win at Rochester. His two-run triple in the top of the eight tied the score at 11-11 as part of a three-run inning that gave the Red Dragons the lead for good. For the season, Bomasuto is batting .442 with 13 RBI and a team-high 19 runs scored. Cortland is 15-1 and is ranked second nationally.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Brendyn Karinchak (SR)
Oswego (Walden/Valley Central)
Karinchak pitched eight innings in a 5-2 win over Plattsburgh Sunday night, helping the Lakers remain undefeated in the SUNYAC. The senior only allowed six hits while striking out eight. He also earned his third win on the season.
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jean Stahl (JR) Â
Buffalo State, OF (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East)
Stahl hit .471 (8 of 17) during the final five games of the Bengals' spring trip to Clermont, Fla. She had at least one hit in all five games and is currently on a seven-game hit streak.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - Katie Rutcofsky (JR)
New Paltz, (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy)
New Paltz junior pitcher Katie Rutcofsky threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the Hawks' 5-1 loss to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the back end of a doubleheader on Wednesday. New Paltz finished 0-2 on the week. Rutcofsky, who worked quickly with just 26 pitches, yielded just two hits and one walk while striking out one. On the season, she leads the SUNYAC in ERA (0.76) while holding opponents to a .182 batting average, which is the second-lowest in the conference. New Paltz (7-5) returns to action on Wednesday, April 1, at The Sage Colleges.
MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Eric Soderquist (FR) Â
Potsdam, Attackman (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown)
Soderquist had the most productive week of his young Potsdam career with five goals and four assists for nine points. The freshman had a personal best six points on three goals and three assists in Tuesday's 13-5 win over Morrisville. He then followed it up with a two-goal, one-assist day in the Bears 8-7 win over the Geneseo in Potsdam's SUNYAC opener. Soderquist scored the game-winner with just 56 seconds left in the contest.
MEN'S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Matt Massaria (JR) Â
Plattsburgh (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park HS)
An instrumental figure in a 2-0 week for the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team, junior goalkeeper Matt Massaria stood strong between the pipes. Of 120 minutes of possible action, the Floral Park, N.Y., product played all but 3:54 and averaged 12.5 saves per game.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ashley Gentile (JR) Â
Cortland, Midfield (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker)
Gentile helped guide the sixth-ranked Red Dragons to a 3-0 record last week, scoring 15 points on 14 goals and one assist, while adding five ground balls, nine draw controls and five caused turnovers. In a 20-5 victory versus Nazareth on Tuesday, she netted four goals and recorded four ground balls, six draws and four caused turnovers. In a 13-10 win at Ithaca on Thursday, Gentile registered career highs of six points and five goals and recorded one ground ball and two draws. She finished off her week by matching her career high with five goals in a 14-10 win versus Fredonia on Saturday. Gentile also contributed one draw and one caused turnover in the victory. For the season, she leads the Red Dragons with 30 points on a team-high 27 goals and three assists. She leads the team with eight caused turnovers and is second with 28 draws. Her 30 points this season have already surpassed her career-high of 29 points scored last season.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Colleen Hathaway (SR)
Brockport, Defense (Watertwon, NY/South Jefferson)
Colleen Hathaway played exceptional defense for Brockport in its fourth straight win of the season Tuesday night, as she was able to scoop five ground balls away from William Smith, cause three turnovers and also give Brockport possession of the ball with a draw control. All of this was done while Hathaway didn't turn the ball over a single time herself.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jarred Iacovelli (SR) Â
Cortland (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional)
Iacovelli won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Monmouth Season Opener meet. His time of 9:23.14 is an ECAC qualifier.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Connor Ten Eyck (SR) Â
Cortland (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa)
Ten Eyck finished first out of 15 competitors in the pole vault at the Monmouth Season Opener Meet in New Jersey. His winning height of 4.50 meters (14' 9") is an ECAC qualifier.
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Jazlyn Porter (JR)
Buffalo State (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls)
Porter ran a leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay at the Pasadena Games on Friday which blazed to a school record, posting the nation's best time so far this season, clocking 3:49.59. Porter was also fourth in the 200-meter dash, finishing only behind non-Division III racers, and her time of 25.37 seconds ranks sixth in DIII. She also placed second in the long jump (5.21m).Â
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Dominique Mitchell (SR) Â
Buffalo State (Wyandanch, NY/Wyandanch Memorial)
Mitchell posted the 10th-best triple jump in DIII this season (11.33m), placing third at the Pasadena Games on Friday, behind two non-collegiate competitors.
