ECAC Athletes of the Week
The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) honored four State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Athletes of the Week for the week of January 18th - 25th.
Men's Division III Upstate Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week
Melique Garcia – SUNY Cortland, Senior, Watervliet, N.Y.
Garcia earned a pair of top three finishes at the predominantly Division I Cornell Upstate Challenge. The senior finished second of 55 competitors in the 200-meter dash (22.17) and third of 38 competitors in the 60-meter dash (6.86). Garcia's 200-meter dash time is currently the best in all of NCAA Division III and his 60-meter dash time ranks second nationally.
Men's Division III Upstate Swimmer of the Week
Dan Costa – SUNY Potsdam, Senior, Spencerport, N.Y.
Costa won three solo events for the Bears on Friday night against Clarkson. The senior took home wins in the 100 backstroke (56.11), 50 freestyle (22.68) and the 200 backstroke (2:02.73), while also teaming up to take the win in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:43.93. Costa added another three solo wins to his total in the 50 backstroke (25.99), 100 backstroke (55.87) and the 50 freestyle (22.99) against Saint Michael's. He also combined with teammates to take the victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.81.
Women's Division III Upstate Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week
Taylor Hudson – SUNY Cortland, Sr., Victor, N.Y.
Hudson finished second of 33 in the long jump with an ECAC height of 18' 3.25” at the predominantly Division I Cornell Upstate Challenge. Her distance currently ranks third nationally in Division III. Hudson also finished seventh in the high jump with a height of 5'3”, which is also an ECAC qualifier.
Women's Division III Upstate Swimmer of the Week
Molly McCulloch – New Paltz, Freshman, Rome, N.Y.
McCulloch captured four individual events and participated on two winning relays in a 2-0 week for the Hawks. Against Mount Saint Mary, she took first in the 50-freestyle (25.76) and the 100-freestyle (56.62). Against SUNY Oneonta, the freshman earned top-finishes in the 100-backstroke (1:03.52) and 100-butterfly (58.33), while also participating on the first-place 200 freestyle relay (1:42.67) team. McColluch's time in the 100-butterfly is the fastest in the SUNYAC this season and broke the event's Elting Pool record by more than a second.
