SUNYAC picks Athletes of the Week
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honors thirteen athletes with weekly awards. This week there were five athletes from Cortland and four from Geneseo while athletes from Brockport, Buffalo State, Oneonta and Oswego were also recognized for their performances during the week of February 2-8.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Mark Hanifin (SR) Â
Cortland (Fort Plain, N.Y./Fort Plain)
Hanifin won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.10) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.33) during Cortland's home dual-meet loss to Fredonia. In addition, he swam the anchor leg on the Red Dragons' winning 200-yard medley relay. Cortland outscored Fredonia in the swimming portion of the meet (139-123) but was outscored 32-0 in diving.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK – Sam Randall (FR) Â
Geneseo (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland)
Randall swept both diving events to lead the Knights to first place out of six teams (including SUNYAC-rivals Oswego, Buffalo State and Brockport) at the Geneseo Invitational, Saturday. Randall won the 3-meter with a score of 528.90 and the 1-meter with a 504.35.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK –  Abigail Max (SR) Â
Geneseo (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford)
Max won three events to lead the No. 21 Knights to first place out of six teams (including SUNYAC rivals Brockport, Oswego and Buffalo State) at the Geneseo Invitational. Max was victorious in the 200 butterfly (2:10.96) and the 200 individual medley (2:15.17) while also joining sophomore Emily Jaworski, junior Jenna Gibbons and senior Stephanie Wilcoxen on the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.26).
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Lydia Allen (SR)
Brockport (Cortland, NY/Cortland)
Lydia Allen recorded a personal best on the 1-meter diving event for The College at Brockport during the Geneseo Invitational, scoring 431.85, en route to capturing first place. CAA Division III championships in late March.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nick Zappia (SR) Â
Cortland, Forward (Manlius, NY/Kingston Voyageurs)
Zappia helped lead the Red Dragons to a pair on on-conference wins at Canton over the weekend with four goals, becoming just the 11th player in program history to eclipse 100 career points in the process. He raised his career numbers to 102 points on 57 goals and 45 assists and ranks seventh in total points and is tied for second in career goals. In a 6-5 OT win on Saturday, Zappia netted two goals, the second of which put him at 100 career points. In a 6-3 victory on Saturday, he tallied the game-winning goal early in the third period and added a short-handed goal to close out the scoring. Zappia has 40 points on 23 goals and 17 assists and leads Div. III nationally in points and goals.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Nick Horrigan (SR) Â
Geneseo, Goalie (Mount Forest, Ontario)
Horrigan was credited with 24 saves in a 3-0 shutout of visiting Brockport on Saturday. Notching his fourth shutout of the season, he moved into first place on Geneseo's all-time list with five shutouts to date. Horrigan leads the SUNYAC with a .944 save percentage and is second with a 1.71 goals against average.

ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Mitchell Herlihey (FR)
Oswego, F (Ottawa, Ont./Nepean Raiders)
Herlihey had six points in a two-win weekend for the Lakers this weekend. In the Lakers 6-2 win against Morrsiville State on Friday, the freshman had a career best five points, notching two goals and three assists, including an apple on the game-winning goal. In the follwoing day's 5-1 win, Herlihey recorded another assist. The Ottawa native was part of a line for the Lakers that registered a combined 21 points between its two-game home stand.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gordon Lyons (SR) Â
Geneseo, F (Amherst, N.Y./Canisius)
Lyons led the Knights to a 2-0 week, picking up wins at Oswego, 59-55, and Brockport, 76-62. In the victory over the Lakers, he totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds before compiling 21 points, 17 boards and five assist in the victory over the Golden Eagles. The nation's leader in rebounding has now notched a double-double in 18 of 19 games this season.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Rae Frasier (SR) Â
Cortland, Forward (Schenectady, N.Y./Â Schenectady)
Frasier averaged 14.3 points and 10 rebounds per game in a 3-0 week for the Red Dragons. She shot 71 percent from the field (20-of-28). Frasier entered the week averaging 5.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in her first 16 games. She opened Tuesday with 21 points (10-of-12 shooting) and 11 rebounds in a win over Brockport, followed by 16 points and nine rebounds at Buffalo State and six points and 10 boards in an overtime win at Fredonia.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Joe Shinn (JR) Â
Cortland (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle)
Shinn broke Cortland's school record in the 60-meter hurdles with his time of 8.14 seconds in the finals of the event at the Ramapo Indoor Select in New York City. He broke the previous school mark by a tenth of a second. Shinn finished second out of 25 competitors in the event and currently ranks third nationally in Div. III with his time.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Patrick Weinert (SR) Â
Oneonta (Schenevus, NY/Schenevus)
Highlighting this weekend's meet at Ithaca was the performance of Weinert in the weight throw. Last week, he had set the facility record in the event and, this week, he soared past that mark while breaking a 21-year old SUNYAC record. Weinert's heave of 19.38m (63' 7") bested his mark of 18.99m last week while taking down the Oneonta school record in the event of 19.13m set last year by teammate J.D. Roth at the NCAA Division III indoor championships. The distance also broke the SUNYAC record of 19.16m set back in 1994 by Trevor Hitchcock of Fredonia. Weinert's mark is currently #4 on the NCAA performance list in Division III for the event.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jazmin Dunham (SR) Â
Buffalo State (Rochester, NY./Greece-Olympia)
The senior won the 60-meter hurdles at the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday in her first meet since 2013, after taking last season off due to injury. Dunham's winning time of 8.85 seconds is the fourth-best in Division III so far this season. She also ran a leg of the 4x200-meter relay which finished first with a time of 1:49.76.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Taylor Hudson (SR) Â
Cortland (Victor, N.Y./Victor)
Supporting Info:Â Hudson finished second of 36 in the long jump and tied for fourth of 25 in the high jump at the Ramapo Indoor Select meet in New York City. Her long jump of 5.58 meters (18' 3.75") is an ECAC qualifier and ranks fifth nationally in Div. III. Her high jump of 1.60 meters (5' 3") is also an ECAC qualifier. In addition, Hudson qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with an ECAC time of 9.45 seconds.
