Plattsburgh and Fredonia Net Player of the Week Honors
Senior Pat Shaughnessy (Plattsburgh, NY) and junior Meaghan Meszaros (Selden, NY/Newfield) led Plattsburgh and Fredonia to two and three wins on the week, respectively, to net Soccer Player of the Week accolades.
Shaughnessy, a senior forward, was named SUNYAC men’s soccer Player of the Week after he figured into six of Plattsburgh's seven goals over the 2-0 weekend. In a 4-1 win over Fredonia, Shaughnessy goal in the 23rd minute proved to be the game-winner. He also added two assists in the victory. On Saturday, he tallied a goal in each half and assisted on the Cardinals' third goal as Plattsburgh defeated Buffalo State 3-1. The two wins kept Plattsburgh in contention to earn a playoff spot in the SUNYAC tournament. Plattsburgh wraps up its conference schedule next weekend on the road. The Cardinals will face Geneseo Friday at 3 p.m. before travelling to Brockport for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
Meszaros posted three shutouts on the week, including two against conference opponents, to earn SUNYAC Player of the Week. With the two conference wins, Fredonia State clinched a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament, after finishing eighth in the standings a year ago. Meszaros and the Blue Devils started the week with a 4-0 win over Elmira. On Friday, she made five saves against Plattsburgh in a 3-0 victory and then made one stop on Saturday in a 5-0 decision against Potsdam. Meszaros has posted five consecutive shutouts bringing her season total to seven. She has not allowed a goal in over 483 minutes, dating back to Sept. 23.
